Microsoft Azure is Microsoft’s cloud platform for building, deploying, and managing applications and other workloads. It combines infrastructure services, managed application platforms, containers, databases, networking, storage, identity, security, analytics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and management tools. Microsoft describes Azure as its enterprise infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offering.
Azure is not one product with one monthly price. You select individual services, regions, performance tiers, and usage levels, then pay according to consumption and the purchasing agreement on your account. The practical way to understand Azure is to match a workload to the least operationally demanding service that meets its technical, location, resilience, and compliance requirements.
What is Microsoft Azure?
Azure is a collection of cloud services hosted in Microsoft-operated datacenters. Instead of buying and maintaining every server, storage system, database engine, and networking component yourself, you provision the capabilities you need through Azure and manage them through Microsoft’s cloud control plane.
Microsoft’s official document Data Residency, Data Sovereignty, and Compliance in the Microsoft Cloud calls Azure “the Microsoft IaaS and PaaS enterprise offering.” That description is useful but not exhaustive: Azure’s catalog also includes services for containers, data, identity, security, analytics, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and operations.

The platform changes frequently. Product names, regional availability, pricing meters, and free allowances can change, so examples in this guide illustrate the major categories rather than representing a complete or permanent catalog.
IaaS: infrastructure you configure
Infrastructure as a service gives you virtualized building blocks such as virtual machines, disks, networks, and related controls. You choose the operating system and much of the software stack, and you remain responsible for more administration: patching, configuration, capacity planning, and application deployment.
Azure Virtual Machines are the clearest example. They run Windows or Linux workloads when you need operating-system-level control, a specialized configuration, or software that is not available on a more managed platform.
PaaS: a managed application platform
Platform as a service shifts more of the underlying operation to Microsoft. You deploy code or an application component while Azure manages more of the servers, operating-system maintenance, or scaling mechanics. The trade-off is less low-level control in exchange for faster delivery and fewer infrastructure tasks.
Azure Functions, for example, runs event-driven code without requiring you to maintain a continuously running virtual machine. Other managed services provide application, container, and database capabilities at different levels of abstraction.
What is Azure used for?
Organizations use Azure for new applications, existing enterprise systems, data platforms, integration, backup and recovery designs, and workloads that need elastic capacity. The appropriate service depends on what you are running and how much infrastructure your team wants to operate.
Compute and virtual machines
Azure Virtual Machines provide Windows and Linux instances. They fit workloads that need operating-system access, custom agents, legacy software, or precise control over compute and networking. Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets manage groups of virtual machines, helping you deploy and operate a fleet rather than configuring each instance independently.

Serverless execution
Azure Functions executes code in response to events such as messages, timers, or HTTP requests. It is useful for short-running processing, automation, integrations, and APIs where you prefer to pay for execution and let the platform handle more of the runtime infrastructure.
Before choosing Functions, check the workload’s execution duration, state requirements, networking needs, and scaling behavior. A continuously running or highly specialized process may fit another compute option better.
Containers and Kubernetes
Containers package an application and its dependencies in a consistent unit. Azure Container Registry stores container images. Azure Container Apps supports serverless container-based applications, while Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) manages Kubernetes clusters for teams that need Kubernetes’ scheduling, networking, and extensibility model.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →These choices differ mainly in operational responsibility. Container Apps can reduce cluster administration for suitable applications. AKS provides Kubernetes capabilities but requires more decisions about cluster configuration, upgrades, security, observability, and workload operations. A container image alone does not determine which hosting service is appropriate.
Databases
Azure SQL and Azure Cosmos DB are examples of database services in the catalog. Database selection should follow the application’s data model, consistency and availability needs, query patterns, scale, integration requirements, and operational skills. This general overview cannot select a database for a specific workload.
Managed database services can remove server-maintenance tasks, but they still require schema design, identity and access controls, backup and recovery planning, performance monitoring, and cost management.
Storage, networking, identity, security, analytics, and AI
Azure also includes services for storing data, connecting networks, managing identities, protecting workloads, analyzing information, building AI solutions, connecting Internet of Things devices, and operating cloud environments. These categories are often combined: an application may use managed compute, a database, object storage, private networking, identity controls, monitoring, and analytics at the same time.
Because the catalog and service names evolve, begin with the workload and required capabilities rather than searching for a single “Azure product.”

How to choose an Azure service
Use the following sequence before creating resources. It prevents a common mistake: selecting a service because it is familiar, then discovering that its management burden, regional support, or billing meter does not fit the workload.
- Define the workload. Decide whether you are hosting a conventional server, an event-driven function, a containerized application, a Kubernetes platform, a database, a data pipeline, or another workload.
- Set the control boundary. Identify whether you need operating-system access and custom software. If not, consider a more managed platform that removes routine infrastructure work.
- Describe runtime behavior. Record expected requests, execution time, concurrency, uptime, burstiness, storage, and data-transfer patterns. These characteristics affect both service fit and cost.
- Set data and compliance constraints. Determine where data may be stored and processed, which identities need access, and what retention, security, or audit controls are required.
- Check regional support. Confirm that the exact service, tier, and features are available in the target region. Availability differs by service and region.
- Model failure and recovery. Decide whether the workload needs redundancy across availability zones, regions, or another recovery design. Do not assume that every service or tier supports the same resilience options.
- Estimate and monitor cost. Use the Azure pricing calculator with the actual region, tier, capacity, storage, data movement, and usage assumptions. Add budgets and alerts before production deployment.
| Workload requirement | Azure example | Management trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system access or custom server software | Azure Virtual Machines | Most infrastructure control; you operate more of the operating system and application stack. |
| Groups of virtual machines that scale together | Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets | Fleet management is centralized, but VM administration remains your responsibility. |
| Event-driven code without a continuously managed server | Azure Functions | Less server operation; runtime, execution, networking, and scaling limits must fit the workload. |
| Serverless container application | Azure Container Apps | Less cluster administration than Kubernetes, with a different feature and control model. |
| Kubernetes orchestration | Azure Kubernetes Service | Rich Kubernetes control; greater responsibility for cluster and workload operations. |
| Relational or globally distributed data service | Azure SQL or Azure Cosmos DB | Managed database operation, but data modeling, access, performance, backup, and usage choices remain important. |
Azure regions, geographies, and availability zones
Location is both a technical and a governance decision. An Azure region is a geographic area containing one or more datacenters. Geographies group regions for data-residency and regulatory considerations. Availability zones are physically separate locations within a region that can improve resilience when a service and architecture support them.
Choose a location by balancing four questions:
- Where must data be stored or processed?
- Which region gives users acceptable network latency?
- Is the required Azure service, feature, and pricing tier available there?
- What failure scenario must the design tolerate?
Regional support is service-specific. A region may support one Azure service or tier but not another, and availability-zone support can differ as well. Verify the current documentation for the exact service before committing to an architecture. The older Microsoft infrastructure document that describes Azure’s IaaS and PaaS positioning should not be treated as a current regional-availability list.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How does Azure pricing work?
Azure uses service- and usage-based billing rather than one universal subscription price. Your bill is shaped by the products you deploy, configuration, region, currency, agreement, and actual consumption. Microsoft’s service-pricing information notes that estimates can vary with the purchasing agreement, purchase date, and currency conversion.
There is therefore no meaningful answer to “How much does Azure cost per month?” without a workload. Two applications using Azure can have very different bills even when they use the same broad service category.
Main cost drivers
| Driver | What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Service | VM, function, container, database, storage, networking, or another product | Each service has its own billing meters and pricing structure. |
| Region | Target Azure region and geography | Rates and feature availability can vary by location. |
| Performance tier | Instance size, database tier, storage performance, or container capacity | Higher capacity or performance generally changes the meter and rate. |
| Runtime or capacity | Hours, executions, requests, allocated resources, or concurrent instances | Intermittent and continuously running workloads consume resources differently. |
| Storage | Amount stored, transaction activity, redundancy, and retention | Stored data and operations can produce separate charges. |
| Data movement | Expected ingress, egress, and cross-service or cross-region traffic | Network usage can add material cost, especially when data leaves a region. |
| Agreement and currency | Pay-as-you-go, a licensing or partner agreement, currency, and applicable offer | Your account terms determine the price that actually applies. |
Why an illustrative bill can mislead
A sample monthly figure is not a quote. It becomes misleading when it omits region, utilization, storage, data transfer, redundancy, or the customer’s agreement. Treat any estimate as a scenario with explicit assumptions, not as a typical Azure bill or a guaranteed price.
How to estimate Azure costs
Microsoft’s Azure pricing calculator is designed to estimate combinations of products. Use it after you have a basic architecture, not as a substitute for defining the workload.
Recommended Free Tools
- List every planned component. Include compute, databases, storage, networking, monitoring, backup, security, and any other service that will generate usage.
- Select the region. Use the region where the workload is intended to run and check that each selected service is available there.
- Choose a realistic tier. Enter the VM size, database performance level, container capacity, storage redundancy, or other configuration you expect to use.
- Enter usage assumptions. Add runtime hours, executions, requests, stored data, transactions, concurrent capacity, and data transfer. Model both ordinary and peak periods.
- Review the billing period and currency. Confirm whether the calculator is showing a monthly scenario, which currency is selected, and which agreement or offer is relevant.
- Run sensitivity cases. Create separate low, expected, and high-usage scenarios. A quiet development environment and a production system should not share one unexplained number.
- Validate after deployment. Compare actual usage with the assumptions, then adjust capacity, schedules, architecture, or service selection where appropriate.
The calculator is an estimate, not a promise. Microsoft states that pricing can change with the agreement, date of purchase, and currency conversion, so check the current offer that applies to your account before committing budget.

Is Azure free?
Azure has a free-account offer and free monthly allowances, but “free” does not mean unlimited use or a permanently free Azure environment. Microsoft’s account page captured on October 13, 2026 describes the following offer terms:
- $200 credit for up to 30 days. This introductory credit is time-limited.
- 20-plus popular services with monthly free amounts for 12 months. This applies to qualifying new customers, subject to the offer’s eligibility and regional conditions.
- 65-plus services with monthly free amounts on an ongoing basis. These are allowances, not unlimited consumption.
The counts and credit amount are offer terms captured on that date, not a guarantee that the live offer will remain unchanged. Check Microsoft’s current Azure account and free-services terms before signing up.
What happens when the free allowance ends?
Microsoft says usage beyond the specified monthly free amounts is billed at the applicable rates. Services included in a time-limited allowance may continue running after the free period and then incur charges. A resource that is no longer needed should be stopped or deleted; leaving it provisioned can create billable usage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe free account is limited to new customers. Microsoft’s free-services information also describes eligibility limitations and notes that the 12-month offer is not currently provided on the same terms in some geographies. Do not assume that a new email address, a different payment card, or a different country makes an account eligible.
Moving from the free account to pay-as-you-go
Microsoft says customers must move to pay-as-you-go within 30 days or after using the introductory credit, whichever occurs first, to continue receiving free services. Without that move, the account and services are disabled. After moving to pay-as-you-go, usage above free amounts becomes billable.
During signup verification, Microsoft may place a temporary one-dollar charge, or the equivalent in the account’s currency, on the payment card. The authorization is removed after verification according to the account terms; it is not an Azure service fee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controlling Azure spending
Cost control begins before deployment. Write down the owner, purpose, region, expected lifetime, and monthly usage assumption for every resource. Use separate environments for development, testing, and production so that a temporary experiment is not mistaken for a permanent system.
- Set a shutdown or deletion plan for temporary virtual machines, test databases, and demonstration resources.
- Review storage retention and redundancy rather than keeping every copy indefinitely.
- Account for data transfer and cross-region designs, not only compute consumption.
- Compare the operational cost of a managed service with the staff time required to run virtual machines or clusters yourself.
- Recheck the estimate whenever you change region, tier, capacity, resilience, or traffic assumptions.
- Inspect actual consumption after launch and investigate unexpected resources or usage spikes promptly.
Free allowances should be treated as a bounded experiment. They do not remove the need to monitor resources, understand expiration dates, or verify which meters are covered.

Security, identity, and operational responsibility
Azure provides services for identity and security, but moving a workload to the cloud does not transfer every security responsibility to Microsoft. You still need to decide who can administer resources, how applications authenticate, which networks are reachable, how secrets are handled, and how incidents and recovery are managed.
The responsibility boundary depends on the service. A virtual machine leaves you responsible for more operating-system and application configuration. A managed database or serverless platform removes some infrastructure tasks but does not automatically produce a secure schema, least-privilege access, safe application code, or a tested recovery process.
Build operational requirements into the design: access ownership, logging, alerting, backup, recovery objectives, patching responsibilities, and a process for reviewing configuration changes.
When to use an Azure partner
Some teams can design and operate Azure directly. Others need help migrating an existing system, implementing a landing zone, managing operations, or optimizing costs. Microsoft’s pricing-calculator information directs customers to partners for planning, implementation, management, support, and cost optimization.
Microsoft Partner Center documentation explains that partners can access sales leads and that Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) partners may offer trials and sell Microsoft subscriptions, including Azure. These are partner-business routes, not proof that every publisher or consultant is eligible for a referral payment.
When evaluating an implementation or managed-services partner, ask for a written scope covering architecture, migration steps, security responsibilities, monitoring, support hours, ownership of subscriptions and data, exit procedures, and how fees are calculated. Keep the Azure subscription and billing assumptions visible to your own finance and technical teams.
A practical Azure decision checklist
Before creating a production resource, confirm the following:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The workload and its runtime behavior are documented.
- You have chosen the required level of infrastructure control.
- The selected service is available in the intended region and tier.
- Data-residency and sovereignty requirements are understood.
- Availability-zone or multi-region resilience is justified by the business requirement.
- Identity, network access, secrets, logging, backup, and recovery responsibilities have owners.
- The pricing calculator includes all major services, storage, capacity, and data movement.
- The free-account eligibility, allowance, and expiration conditions are known if you are using the introductory offer.
- Temporary resources have an owner and a removal date.
- Actual usage will be reviewed against the estimate after deployment.
Bottom line: what Azure is and how to approach it
Microsoft Azure is a broad cloud platform, not a single server product or a fixed-price subscription. Its IaaS services provide control through virtual machines; its PaaS and managed services reduce infrastructure work; and its catalog extends across containers, databases, storage, networking, identity, security, analytics, AI, Internet of Things, and management.
Start with the workload, choose the service that supplies the needed capability with an acceptable management burden, verify regional and resilience requirements, and build a workload-specific estimate. The free account can be useful for learning and experiments, but its credit, monthly allowances, eligibility rules, regional conditions, and expiration terms are limited and can change. For production, treat the pricing calculator, monitoring, and explicit ownership of operations as essential parts of the architecture.
