Microchip’s MPLAB AI Coding Assistant is a VS Code extension that brings AI chat and coding help tailored to Microchip products into the editor. Microchip announced it on February 19, 2025, describing a free assistant based on the open-source Continue project and configured with a Microchip chatbot. You need VS Code, the MPLAB Extension Pack, a myMicrochip account and an API key to set it up.
What the MPLAB AI Coding Assistant is
This is software for Microsoft Visual Studio Code, not a standalone MPLAB X hardware product. Microchip describes the current offering as a free, customized version of the Continue extension for developers working with Microchip products. Its chatbot is intended to provide Microchip-specific help in the coding environment, with information Microchip says is updated continuously. Microchip’s launch announcement and its product page describe the tool and its purpose.
What you can do with it
The assistant appears in a VS Code sidebar, where you can ask questions and work with code without switching to a separate chat application. Microchip lists code generation, in-file editing, advanced autocomplete, code review, error detection, explanations and comments among its capabilities. It also provides searchable access to Microchip documentation and datasheets. Microchip’s product page and launch materials outline these functions.

Microchip also highlights the ability to show block diagrams in the VS Code interface through sidebar chat, rather than limiting responses to text. Its AI overview frames the broader workflow around context-aware assistance, code generation and refinement, debugging support and embedded development.

How to install and activate it
Microchip Developer Help’s setup instructions, last modified May 5, 2026, describe the current installation sequence. The assistant is included in the MPLAB Extension Pack, so you install the pack rather than looking for a separate hardware component. Read Microchip’s installation guide for the official walkthrough.
- Install Microsoft Visual Studio Code.
- In VS Code, download and install the MPLAB Extension Pack from the VS Code Marketplace. The AI Coding Assistant is included in the pack.
- Sign in with your myMicrochip credentials when prompted.
- Obtain an API key through the setup flow and copy the generated key.
- Accept the terms prompt to complete activation.
Is it free?
Microchip’s launch announcement says the assistant is available for free, but notes that some advanced features may require a subscription license. The official material cited here does not identify which individual features fall under that qualification or specify a subscription price. Check the current in-product terms before relying on a particular feature as free. The launch release and related launch information state the free positioning and subscription caveat.

What is—and is not—established about its results
The official material describes intended functions, but publishes no numeric productivity or accuracy result, nor a measured adoption rate or response time. That means the available evidence supports describing what the assistant offers, not claiming that it outperforms general-purpose coding assistants or guarantees correct code. Treat generated or edited code as a starting point: review it against the relevant Microchip documentation and test it in your project.
