Magento Open Source is Adobe’s open-source e-commerce platform for building and running an online storefront. It is a PHP application that a merchant or technical team installs and maintains on compatible infrastructure; Composer manages its PHP packages, while modules provide business functionality and themes shape the storefront’s appearance.
How Magento Open Source works
A Magento store is assembled from the application’s packages, run on a compatible server stack, and configured and maintained with command-line tools. Its main building blocks are Composer-managed dependencies, a PHP framework, modules, and themes.
- Acquire the application: Adobe’s production installation workflow uses Composer to create a project from the Magento Open Source metapackage. Composer resolves PHP packages and dependencies;
composer.jsondeclares packages, whilecomposer.lockrecords the specific versions selected for that installation. See Adobe’s installation documentation and package-management guidance. - Run it on supported infrastructure: The application depends on PHP, required PHP extensions, and supporting server software. Requirements vary by Magento release, so the stack must match the version being installed.
- Use framework components for store behavior: Adobe describes the Commerce framework as a PHP framework shared by Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source. Modules group code around business features and can extend other modules; themes control storefront presentation. See the Architecture Guide and Module Overview.
- Configure and maintain it: Installation and upgrades use command-line workflows. Adobe distinguishes production integrator installation from a Git-based workflow intended for people contributing to the Magento Open Source codebase.
What you need to run Magento Open Source
Magento Open Source is not a ready-hosted store: its documented installation expects access to an application server, Composer, command-line operation, and infrastructure compatible with the selected release. The store operator or their technical team is responsible for providing and maintaining that environment.
As a release-specific example, Adobe’s System Requirements page, updated September 18, 2026, lists the following for Magento Open Source 2.4.9:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Component | Requirement listed for 2.4.9 |
|---|---|
| PHP | 8.5 |
| Composer | 2.10 |
| Search | OpenSearch 3 |
| Database | MariaDB 12.3 recommended or 11.8 |
| Message brokers | RabbitMQ 4.3 or ActiveMQ Artemis 2 |
| Cache | Valkey 9 |
| Web server | nginx 1.30 |
That requirements page also specifies PHP extensions and Linux x86-64 operating-system requirements, and says Windows and macOS are not supported for the listed server environments. These are 2.4.9 requirements, not universal requirements for every Magento version. Check Adobe’s table for the exact release and patch you intend to deploy or upgrade to. Adobe’s Magento Open Source package reference, updated August 20, 2026, documents the 2.4.9 Composer dependency set.
What modules and themes do
Modules add or extend functionality
Modules organize code around business features. They can provide functionality or extend another module, which gives developers a structured way to customize or integrate store behavior rather than treating the application as one undifferentiated codebase.

Themes affect storefront appearance
Themes shape how the storefront is presented to shoppers. The framework, modules, and themes therefore address different concerns: shared application structure, business behavior, and visual presentation.
Is Magento Open Source free?
“Open Source” identifies the Magento product edition, but it does not mean operating a store has no cost or technical burden. The documented installation requires compatible infrastructure and technical work with Composer and command-line tools. The sources cited here do not establish a current feature-by-feature comparison with Adobe Commerce, so confirm edition-specific features and services in Adobe’s documentation rather than assuming the editions include the same capabilities.

Do you need a developer to use Magento?
You need technical capability to install and operate Magento Open Source as documented. A merchant could rely on an in-house technical team or an outside specialist; the key responsibilities include provisioning compatible infrastructure, managing Composer dependencies, using command-line installation and upgrade workflows, and checking release compatibility. The platform’s module and theme model also supports customization, but the amount of development work depends on whether its existing functionality and presentation meet the store’s needs.

How to evaluate Magento for a store
- Infrastructure ownership: Decide who will provide compatible services and handle installation, upgrades, and ongoing operations.
- Customization needs: Assess whether existing modules and themes fit the business or whether custom modules, integrations, or theme work will be needed.
- Edition-specific requirements: Verify the features and services available in the exact product edition and release; shared framework documentation does not establish identical capabilities.
- Maintenance capacity: Identify who will manage Composer dependencies, command-line tasks, and compatibility checks when the store changes or the platform is upgraded.
