Lighttpd (“lighty”) is an open-source web server designed to use CPU and memory efficiently. That makes it a candidate for workloads where resource use matters, but the project’s “high-performance” positioning is not proof that it outperforms nginx, Apache, or another server in every setup. For a new deployment, look to the stable 1.4.x line; the latest release identified here is 1.4.85, announced July 8, 2026.
What is Lighttpd?
Lighttpd is software that serves web content over HTTP. The project describes it as optimized for high-performance environments and efficient use of memory and CPU. It is intended for both small and large systems, but real resource use depends on the configuration, enabled modules, traffic, and the work the server must perform.
Its official feature list includes IPv4 and IPv6, HTTP/1.0, HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, HTTPS through supported TLS libraries, and CGI. The project also lists FastCGI, authentication, output compression, and URL rewriting. These are project-documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every package or build enables every feature; module selection and configuration matter. See the Lighttpd project overview.
Is Lighttpd fast?
The project calls Lighttpd fast and emphasizes efficient CPU and memory use. That is the project’s design aim, not a current independent comparison proving that it is faster than nginx, Apache, or another server. The reviewed official material does not provide a reproducible, matched-condition benchmark that would support a general throughput, latency, memory, or percentage advantage.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a server against the workload and operating requirements you actually have. If you are comparing candidates, measure them under representative traffic and configuration rather than relying on a universal ranking.
- Static-file throughput and latency under expected load.
- Dynamic application integration and the CGI or FastCGI requirements of your stack.
- Concurrent connections and memory use per active connection.
- TLS and HTTP protocol needs, plus required modules.
- Configuration familiarity, available operational support, and the cost of maintaining the deployment.
These are comparison criteria, not established Lighttpd scores against other servers.

Which Lighttpd version should you use?
For a new deployment: 1.4.x
The official download listing identifies 1.4.x as the stable branch. The latest release identified in the reviewed official sources is Lighttpd 1.4.85, announced on July 8, 2026. Its announcement describes bug fixes, including a fix for large file uploads to FastCGI and changes to request parsing. Check the 1.4.85 release announcement and your operating system’s package listings for the version currently available to you.
Do not treat 2.0 as the next production release
The separate 2.0 repository says the plan to release the experimental rewrite for production was abandoned. It should not be presented as a forthcoming production replacement for 1.4.x. For deployment decisions, use the stable 1.4.x line and check the project’s official downloads alongside your distribution’s package status.

How should you tune Lighttpd for performance?
Start with the defaults unless you have a specific reason to change a setting. The project’s performance documentation prioritizes correctness and security over marginal speed, and characterizes many tuning options as micro-optimizations. As it puts it, “Proper functionality is more important than marginal increases in performance; a web server that does not function as intended is not useful.”
- Establish a baseline. Measure the current configuration with representative requests, traffic levels, and application behavior.
- Identify a specific bottleneck. Avoid changing settings simply because they appear in a tuning guide; first determine what resource or behavior needs improvement.
- Change one setting at a time. Keep the change only if repeatable measurements show a positive effect without compromising correctness or security.
- Revert ineffective changes. Compare against the baseline and undo settings that do not measurably help the real workload.
The project’s performance documentation sums up the process: “Performance tuning is not magic.” Read its Lighttpd performance guidance before changing configuration.

Account for memory and protocol needs
The performance guidance covers both high-traffic, many-connection deployments and low-memory systems. It notes that HTTP/2 uses more memory than HTTP/1.1, so an operator with tight memory constraints may decide to disable HTTP/2 after evaluating the trade-off. That is a workload-specific option, not a general recommendation to turn off a modern protocol.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is Lighttpd a reasonable choice?
Lighttpd is worth evaluating when its documented capabilities fit your application and you want to assess its resource use under your own conditions. The deciding evidence should come from a representative test and the operational fit—not from the “high-performance” label alone. Compare alternatives on the same workload, hardware, protocol requirements, and measurement method before choosing.
