Level 2 charging is AC charging that typically uses 240 volts at home or 208 volts at commercial sites in the United States. The vehicle’s onboard charger converts that AC electricity to DC for the battery. Level 2 is generally faster than 120-volt Level 1 charging, but it does not have one fixed charging speed: the equipment, electrical supply, car, and battery conditions all affect the power delivered.
What “Level 2” means
Level 2 names a charging power class, not a guaranteed speed or a particular charger model. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) lists Level 2 equipment outputs from 2.9 to 19.2 kilowatts (kW). A charger’s actual output can be limited by the EVSE (the charging equipment), the available circuit and electrical service, or the vehicle’s onboard charger. Battery conditions also affect how quickly energy is accepted.
In typical U.S. installations, Level 2 supplies 240-volt AC power at home and 208-volt AC power at many commercial sites. DOE describes Level 2 as 240 V AC charging, like that used for a household electric dryer, while its fleet-training example shows 208 V at 32 amps—about 6.7 kW. That example is one configuration, not a universal rating. DOE’s EVGrid Assist charts and federal fleet training material explain these examples.
How Level 2 compares with other charging
| Charging type | Power supplied to the vehicle | Typical setting and use |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Typically 120 V AC | Slower charging where a vehicle can remain plugged in for an extended period. |
| Level 2 | Typically 240 V AC at home or 208 V AC at commercial sites; AFDC lists equipment output from 2.9 to 19.2 kW. | Home, workplace, and public charging, often while a car is parked for hours. |
| DC fast charging | Direct current (DC), rather than AC supplied for conversion by the vehicle’s onboard charger. | Installed public stations intended for much faster charging. |
These categories describe different power arrangements, not a promise that every car will charge at the same rate on every unit. For an overview of charging types and speeds, see the U.S. Department of Transportation’s charger guide.

How fast a Level 2 charger charges an EV
AFDC gives approximately 25 miles of driving range per hour as a general Level 2 estimate. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program gives a similar example: about 25 miles per hour for a typical sedan using a 6.7 kW configuration. Neither figure guarantees what a particular car will add in an hour. Range gained depends on the vehicle’s efficiency as well as delivered charging power.
For residential equipment, AFDC says most units operate at up to 30 amps and deliver 7.2 kW. Its broader 2.9–19.2 kW range covers a wider range of Level 2 equipment, not what every home charger or vehicle can use. Check the car’s maximum AC charging rate and the charger’s output rather than relying on the Level 2 label alone. AFDC discusses charging equipment and estimated speeds.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Where Level 2 charging is useful
Level 2 is suited to places where a vehicle can stay connected for hours, including homes, workplaces, and public parking locations. A typical EV can often charge overnight at home, according to AFDC. Charging time still varies with the battery’s capacity and state of charge, the vehicle’s onboard charger, the equipment’s power, the electrical supply, and other vehicle conditions.

Will a Level 2 charger work with your car?
Check the connector at both ends of the charging setup: the vehicle’s inlet and the equipment’s plug. AFDC lists J1772 and J3400/NACS connections for Level 2 charging. Connector availability and compatibility depend on the specific car and charging equipment; an adapter that works for one vehicle or setup should not be assumed to work for another. Confirm compatibility against the vehicle and equipment documentation before buying or using an adapter.

A Level 2 installation is an electrical project, not simply a matter of choosing a charger. In AFDC’s residential guidance, most units operate up to 30 amps and require a dedicated 40-amp circuit under the NEC Article 625 guidance it cites. The specific unit’s installation instructions, the home’s electrical service, and applicable local requirements determine what a particular installation needs. DOE fleet-training material also describes EVSE wiring and dedicated breaker protection.
