Level 1 charging is AC charging from a 120-volt outlet in the common U.S. setup. A portable charging cord connects the outlet to the vehicle, and the car’s onboard charger converts the incoming AC power to DC for its battery. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) estimates roughly 2 to 5 miles of range per charging hour, but the actual rate varies by vehicle and electrical setup.

How Level 1 charging works

In the United States, “Level 1” generally refers to plugging an electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) cordset into a 120 V AC outlet. The cordset supplies AC power to the vehicle; the onboard charger then converts it to DC for the battery. The AFDC describes Level 1 as charging through a 120-volt AC plug: Electric Vehicle Charging Stations.

A common U.S. portable cordset has a household NEMA 5-15 plug on the outlet end and an SAE J1772 connector at the vehicle end. This is a typical arrangement, not a universal fit: check your vehicle’s inlet and the manufacturer’s charging guidance. Many EVs include a portable cordset, so you may not need to buy one separately. The AFDC explains charging at home, work, and public stations in its consumer charging guidance.

How much range Level 1 adds per hour

The AFDC’s general estimate is about 2 to 5 miles of driving range per hour of Level 1 charging. Its station reference gives an estimate of about 5 miles per hour under an assumed 1.9 kW charging rate. These are approximate figures, not guaranteed rates for every vehicle or outlet.

Charging time depends on the starting battery charge, battery capacity and type, the vehicle’s onboard charger, the EVSE’s power, and the electrical service. The AFDC lists these as factors in its charging-station information. The miles added also depend on how efficiently a particular vehicle uses energy.

When a 120 V outlet can be enough

Level 1 can be practical when a suitable outlet is available where the vehicle is parked for an extended period, such as at home or work. The AFDC says it can charge a smaller plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), or replenish a partially depleted all-electric vehicle, overnight. That does not mean every EV can recharge from empty to full overnight; the result depends on the battery and the factors above. See the AFDC’s Electric Vehicles for Consumers guidance.

As a rough way to judge fit, compare the range you use on a typical day with the time the vehicle can remain plugged in. The AFDC’s 2-to-5-mile-per-hour estimate is a planning range, not a promise. If the vehicle regularly needs more energy than Level 1 can add during its parked hours, compare Level 2 charging.

Outlet and circuit safety

A household-looking outlet is not by itself proof that a circuit is appropriate for EV charging. The AFDC consumer handbook says Level 1 EVSE requires a dedicated branch circuit under the National Electrical Code. Circuit suitability and applicable requirements depend on the installation and jurisdiction, so consult the vehicle and EVSE manufacturers and qualified local electrical guidance. The AFDC also advises checking with a utility and electrical contractor about home charging estimates and compliance with applicable codes and regulations.

  • Use a cordset compatible with the vehicle, outlet configuration, and electrical rating.
  • Follow the vehicle and EVSE manufacturers’ instructions.
  • Ask a qualified local electrician to assess circuit suitability if you are unsure.

How common is Level 1 at public charging stations?

In 2023, less than 1% of public EV charging ports in the United States were Level 1, according to the AFDC. This figure concerns public ports only; it does not describe how often Level 1 is used for home charging. See the AFDC’s charging-station data.
