Laravel is a PHP framework for building web applications. It provides a structure and reusable tools for common tasks, so developers can focus on the features of their own app. Laravel is not a programming language or a website that builds a finished product for you.
What Laravel does
PHP is the programming language; Laravel is a framework built with PHP. A framework supplies conventions and building blocks that help organize an application. Laravel describes a web framework as “a structure and starting point for creating your application,” while its documentation highlights tools such as dependency injection, database abstraction, queues, scheduled jobs, and automated testing (Laravel 13.x documentation).
In practice, those capabilities help developers connect application components, work with data, run background tasks, and check that code behaves as intended. They do not replace the decisions and work required to design, build, and maintain the application.
What you can build with Laravel
Laravel can power a full web application, including its server-side logic and pages. It can also act as an API backend that supplies data to a separate JavaScript single-page application or a mobile app. The choice depends on how you want to build and deliver the frontend, not on a rule that Laravel must be used in only one way (Laravel 13.x documentation).

Choose a frontend approach
Laravel supports several ways to build the part of the application users see. Consider how much JavaScript you want to use, whether a separate client needs an API, and whether you want a prebuilt starting point.

The official starter kits are optional. They provide routes, controllers, views, and authentication scaffolding, which can give a new project a head start. You can also start with a fresh Laravel installation and make those choices yourself (Laravel starter kits documentation).

What you need to start
The Laravel 13.x installation guide lists PHP, Composer, and the Laravel installer as prerequisites. Composer manages PHP packages and dependencies. To compile frontend assets, the guide also calls for Node with npm or Bun; the exact frontend setup can differ by project (Laravel 13.x installation guide).
Laravel Herd is an optional graphical local development environment for macOS and Windows, not a requirement. PhpStorm is another optional choice; Laravel’s installation documentation notes its Laravel-aware support (Laravel installation guide).

Create and run a starter project
The Laravel 13.x guide illustrates this workflow after the required tools are installed:
laravel new example-app— create a project namedexample-appwith the Laravel installer.cd example-app— move into the project directory.npm install && npm run build— install the frontend dependencies and build the assets for this example workflow.composer run dev— start the local development process described by the guide.
These commands reflect the documented starting sequence; a project’s frontend tools or setup can call for different steps. Consult the installation guide if you need platform-specific instructions or want to choose an official starter kit (Laravel 13.x installation guide).

Check PHP compatibility before choosing a Laravel version
Compatibility and support dates are version-specific. Laravel’s release table currently lists Laravel 13 for PHP 8.3–8.5 and Laravel 12 for PHP 8.2–8.5. It lists Laravel 13’s release window as Q1 2026, bug fixes through Q3 2027, and security fixes through Q1 2028; for Laravel 12, it lists security fixes through February 24, 2027. Laravel states its general release policy provides 18 months of bug fixes and two years of security fixes. These entries can change, so check the official table when selecting a version (Laravel release notes).
