Ladybird is an independent browser project building a new web engine from scratch. GitHub co-founder and former CEO Chris Wanstrath said in July 2024 that his family had pledged $1 million to support its development. The pledge is not the same as a confirmed payment or a statement of the project’s current budget.
What Ladybird is—and what makes it different
Ladybird began in the SerenityOS community and is being developed as a standalone browser project. Its stated technical distinction is that it is creating a new browser engine rather than adapting code from an existing browser engine. Founder and lead developer Andreas Kling described it as “a brand new engine based on web standards, without borrowing any code from other browsers” in the project’s July 1, 2024 announcement: Ladybird’s announcement.
The project FAQ identifies three core components: LibWeb, which handles web content and standards; LibJS, its JavaScript engine; and LibWasm, its WebAssembly implementation. These are parts of Ladybird’s own development effort, not alternate names for the engines used by established browsers.

Chris Wanstrath, GitHub co-founder and former CEO, announced the pledge on July 1, 2024. He wrote: “This is why I’ve co-founded the Ladybird Browser Initiative with Andreas and my family has pledged $1M to support Ladybird’s development.” His statement attributes the $1 million to his family and describes it as a pledge. It does not establish that the full amount had already been paid, or that $1 million is an annual contribution or the initiative’s current budget. Read Wanstrath’s statement.

How the initiative is funded
The Ladybird Browser Initiative launched on July 1, 2024, as a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Its announcement described a funding model based on donations and company and individual sponsorships, with the software and source code intended to be free. The organization’s IRS Form 1023 submission also described grants as an intended funding source; an application describing plans is not proof of money received. Ladybird’s July 2024 newsletter reported these launch-period contributions. They are historical figures, not a current balance or a claim about ongoing annual support:

These are amounts the project reported in 2024. They should not be added to the family pledge and presented as a current funding total: the sources do not establish when pledged funds were paid or provide a present-day financial statement. The initiative lists sponsorship tiers in its FAQ, but the available project information describes donations and sponsorships rather than an affiliate commission program.

Ladybird reported 1,815,223 passing Web Platform Tests in its May 2025 newsletter. That dated project-reported count is evidence of standards-testing work, not proof that every website will work or that the browser is ready for every everyday task. Test totals change over time, and the figure should not be read as a current result.

In a June 5, 2026 development update, the project said it was preparing for an alpha release. That is a development milestone, not a claim that Ladybird is a finished, broadly supported everyday browser. The sources cited here do not establish its current platform support matrix or whether it is suitable for a particular person’s daily browsing needs. Check the project’s latest release and platform information before relying on it as your primary browser.

The project changed how it accepts code in June 2026. It no longer accepts public pull requests; maintainers control code changes. The source remains public and open source, and the project still welcomes non-code contributions such as bug reports, website testing, standards and design discussion, security reports, and technical feedback. Kling stated, “Ladybird remains open source,” in the June 5, 2026 development-process update.
