Intel Virtualization Technology is a set of processor and platform features that helps virtualization software run multiple operating systems in separate virtual environments on one computer. The main processor feature is VT-x; VT-d adds hardware support for virtualizing I/O devices. Neither feature is a virtual machine by itself: you still need virtualization software, and your processor and system firmware must support the relevant feature.

What Intel Virtualization Technology does

Virtualization software, also called a hypervisor, uses hardware virtualization features to create and manage virtual machines. Each virtual machine can run its own operating system and applications in an isolated environment. Intel describes these environments as independent partitions and characterizes its technology as hardware enhancements that can improve virtualization solutions. Intel’s overview of Intel Virtualization Technology

Enabling a firmware option does not install virtualization software, create a virtual machine, or automatically run another operating system. It makes a supported hardware capability available for software that uses it.

VT-x and VT-d: what is the difference?

Feature What it supports What to check
VT-x Processor-level hardware assistance for virtualization. Intel says it can improve virtualization performance and robustness; that description appears in its 12th Generation Intel Core desktop processor datasheet and should not be read as a quantified performance guarantee for every processor. Whether the exact processor and system BIOS support and expose the feature.
VT-d Hardware-assisted virtualization of I/O devices. It is related to VT-x but is a distinct feature. Whether the processor, BIOS, and chipset support it.

Intel uses “Intel Virtualization Technology” or “Intel VT” as an umbrella term. VT-x concerns processor virtualization; VT-d extends hardware assistance to I/O devices. The two names are not interchangeable, and support for one should not be assumed to establish support for the other. How to check whether your computer supports it

  1. Identify the exact processor. Use your system information or device documentation to find its full model name.
  2. Look up that model on Intel’s processor specification site. Check the virtualization entries under Security & Reliability, including VT-x and, if needed, VT-d. Intel recommends checking the specific processor rather than assuming support from a product family name.
  3. Check the system platform as well. VT-x requires a supporting processor and BIOS. VT-d additionally requires a supporting BIOS and chipset. Processor support alone does not establish that the whole system offers the feature.

Why VT-x may appear unavailable or already in use

There are three separate questions: whether the processor is capable of virtualization, whether the BIOS or UEFI setting enables it, and whether software is currently using the feature. A status indicating that virtualization is unavailable does not always mean the processor lacks support. Intel notes that virtualization software using a hypervisor may already be using VT-x, which can affect what another program reports. Intel guidance on virtualization appearing in use

How to enable VT-x

If your processor and BIOS support VT-x, you can generally enable or disable it in the BIOS or UEFI setup. The exact menu name and location vary by computer and motherboard manufacturer, so there is no single path that applies to every system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Restart the computer and open its BIOS or UEFI setup using the key or method specified by the system manufacturer.
  2. Look for a virtualization setting. It may be labeled Intel Virtualization Technology, VT-x, or a similar term; labels vary by vendor.
  3. Enable the setting, save the change, and restart if the firmware prompts you to do so.

If you cannot find the option, Intel advises contacting the motherboard vendor. The option may depend on the system’s firmware and platform support, not just the processor. For vendor-specific enablement guidance, see Intel’s virtualization support instructions.
