Instagram Close Friends is a list you choose to share selected content with, rather than with your usual audience. It can be used for Stories, posts, Reels, and Notes. People on the list may see a Close Friends label or green marker, but the feature is an audience control—not a guarantee that shared content stays private.
What does Instagram Close Friends mean?
Close Friends is an account owner’s selected audience list. When sharing a post, Note, Reel, or Story, the owner can choose to make it visible only to people on that list. Instagram’s Help Center wording, quoted by Android Authority, says people cannot request to be added.
It is different from making an account private: Close Friends applies to particular shares, while account privacy affects who can access the account’s content more broadly. The owner controls who is on the list and which eligible content to share with it.
What does the green circle on Instagram mean?
A green ring around someone’s profile photo on a Story indicates that the Story was shared with Close Friends. Other formats have their own cues: members may see a Close Friends label on Stories, Notes, or Reels. When Close Friends sharing expanded to feed posts and Reels in November 2023, Instagram used a green star marker for qualifying posts and Reels, according to TechCrunch.

Which content can be shared with Close Friends?

Can someone see if you add or remove them?
Instagram says people are not notified when an account adds or removes them from its Close Friends list. The list is controlled by the account owner, and members cannot ask Instagram to add them on the owner’s behalf.

For a Close Friends Reel, Instagram Help Center wording says other members can see your username and your interaction if you like, comment on, or share that Reel. This guidance is specific to Reels; it should not be assumed to describe every type of Close Friends content.

How private is Close Friends?
The feature narrows who Instagram serves a selected post to, but it cannot control what recipients do with what they see. A recipient could capture or record the screen, or repeat the content to someone else. Only share material you would be comfortable with a recipient preserving or passing along.
