It builds on MVC by organizing an application into feature-level units, each with its own model, view, and controller, and defining how those units communicate. The result is a way to manage presentation-layer complexity—not a guaranteed speed boost or a framework feature with identical behavior everywhere.
What HMVC means
Jason Cai, Ranjit Kapila, and Gaurav Pal introduced HMVC in a JavaWorld article published July 21, 2000. They argued that conventional MVC helps structure graphical user interface interactions but does not, by itself, address the broader client-tier responsibilities of data management, event management, application flow, and widget control. Their proposal was a layered hierarchy that could organize the complete presentation tier. The authors described it as “a powerful yet easy-to-understand layered design methodology for developing a complete presentation layer.” JavaWorld article.
In practical terms, an HMVC application groups related functionality into modules or feature slices. A module might contain the controller, model, and views for a product catalogue, account settings, or reporting area. Modules can be nested or composed, but their dependencies and communication paths should be deliberate rather than relying on arbitrary calls across the application.
How HMVC differs from MVC
MVC separates responsibilities within an application. In CodeIgniter’s description, a model represents data structures and commonly provides data-access functions; a view presents information as a full page or fragment; and a controller handles an HTTP request by coordinating models, views, and other resources. CodeIgniter calls its implementation “loose” MVC because models are optional. CodeIgniter: Model-View-Controller.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HMVC adds a second organizing principle: hierarchy between groups of MVC components. Instead of treating controllers, models, and views as one application-wide pool, a team can place each substantial feature in its own unit. The hierarchy clarifies which module owns a responsibility, how a parent feature can use a child feature, and which dependencies are permitted.
| Aspect | MVC | HMVC |
|---|---|---|
| Primary structure | Separates model, view, and controller responsibilities. | Groups MVC components into hierarchical feature modules. |
| Boundaries | Does not inherently define boundaries between feature groups. | Uses module boundaries and planned communication between them. |
| Typical reason to choose it | A clear separation of data, presentation, and request-handling roles. | More explicit ownership, reuse, and composition across a larger presentation tier. |
What HMVC is intended to improve
The original authors identify three architectural goals: defined communication within a layer, defined communication between layers with minimal coupling, and localized exposure to third-party code. Applied to feature modules, these goals encourage a team to make module interfaces explicit, limit cross-module dependencies, and contain integrations behind owned boundaries. JavaWorld article.

These are design aims, not measured performance claims. HMVC does not automatically make an application faster, more scalable, or less defective. Whether it helps depends on the application’s boundaries, implementation discipline, and how well the structure matches actual ownership and reuse needs.
When HMVC is a good fit
HMVC is worth considering when the application has several substantial features, repeated interface components, separate teams or ownership areas, or growing coupling among controllers and shared libraries. A well-defined module can make a complete feature easier to locate, reuse, and maintain as a unit.

For a small application with few features, module hierarchy may add directory, routing, dependency, and testing conventions without enough benefit to justify them. Compare the options using these questions:
- Are the feature boundaries clear? Modules work best when each has a coherent responsibility and an identifiable owner.
- How much cross-module coupling exists? If modules must reach into one another’s internals, the boundaries are not doing useful work.
- Do you need to reuse or compose complete features? Repeated fragments or widgets may justify explicit module composition.
- Does your framework and version support the approach? Check the actual extension and framework architecture rather than assuming all HMVC implementations work alike.

CodeIgniter 3 with Modular Extensions
The third-party Modular Extensions HMVC project targets CodeIgniter 3.1.x and organizes independent model, controller, and view components into application modules. Its documented features include module locations, module controllers that can be used as regular controllers or widgets, buffered Modules::run() calls that return rendered fragments, loading a module controller like a library, and module-level routes. This is a specific CI3 implementation, not a built-in pattern whose behavior can be assumed across all CodeIgniter versions. Before adopting it, verify compatibility with the exact CI3 release and dependencies in use, and assess whether the third-party extension is suitable for the project’s maintenance needs.
CodeIgniter 4 and HMVC-style organization
CodeIgniter 4’s upgrade documentation says the framework can be configured for an “HMVC” style, but its underlying mechanics differ from CI3. CI4 removes the CI3 superobject, instantiates classes where needed, manages framework components through Services, and uses namespaces and PSR-4 autoloading. CodeIgniter 4 upgrade guide.

That distinction matters: a CI3 extension that relies on CI3 conventions should not be treated as a drop-in CI4 solution. For a CI4 application, use its own services, namespaces, and autoloading model to establish feature boundaries, and check the framework’s current documentation for the configuration and conventions you plan to use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to design module boundaries
Start with features that have a coherent purpose, not with a goal of moving every controller into a separate folder. For each module, decide what it owns, what it exposes, and what other modules may call. Keep data access and presentation responsibilities within that boundary where practical, and avoid direct dependencies on another module’s internal implementation.
When one module needs another’s behavior, define a deliberate call or interface. When a feature needs to display another module’s fragment, treat that as composition and decide where rendering, data passing, and failure handling belong. These conventions are the practical expression of HMVC’s emphasis on explicit communication and reduced coupling; they must be designed for the framework and application rather than assumed from the pattern’s name.
HMVC and other modular MVC frameworks
HMVC is not the only way to organize a modular MVC application. Zend MVC documentation, for example, describes modules that can contain MVC code, libraries, view scripts, and public assets, alongside framework facilities such as routing, dispatchable controllers, service management, events, HTTP request and response objects, and view wiring. This illustrates that modular organization can coexist with an MVC workflow without every framework using the HMVC label. Zend ModuleManager documentation.
