HLS, or HTTP Live Streaming, is a protocol for delivering live and on-demand audio and video over HTTP. A player reads a playlist, selects a media rendition, downloads its segments, and plays them in sequence. When several renditions are available, it can switch between them as network conditions change.

How HLS streaming works

HLS separates the work of preparing media from the work of playing and delivering it. An encoder or packaging system creates media segments and playlists; an HTTP server or content delivery network (CDN) serves those files; and the player requests and presents them. Apple describes HLS as designed to work with ordinary web servers and CDNs. Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming overview explains the protocol and its playback model.

  1. A server or packaging system encodes and divides the media into consecutive segments, then creates playlists that describe them.
  2. The player requests the multivariant playlist, which lists available media playlists.
  3. The player chooses a rendition and fetches its media playlist.
  4. It downloads the referenced segments in sequence and plays them. If suitable alternatives are available, it may switch rendition as network or playback conditions change.
  5. For a live stream, the player periodically reloads the media playlist to find newly published segments. For protected content, it may also need to retrieve keys and decrypt media.

HLS specifies how playlists describe media and how clients retrieve it; it does not itself encode the video, host the files, or ensure a particular delay, uninterrupted playback, or universal device compatibility.

Master, multivariant, and media playlists

Multivariant playlist (also called a master playlist)

This is usually the entry point provided to a player. It lists available media playlists and can advertise alternate bandwidth variants and other tracks. Apple’s current documentation uses “Multivariant Playlist”; the 2017 protocol specification, RFC 8216, uses “Master Playlist.” The terminology differs, but both names refer to the playlist that points to alternatives. Media playlist

A media playlist describes the sequence of segments for a particular stream or rendition. In a live presentation, it is updated as the broadcast advances. In video on demand (VOD), it describes a fixed asset and can indicate that the presentation is complete.

Media segment

A segment is a consecutive piece of audio or video fetched by the player. Apple’s authoring guidance covers MPEG-2 transport stream and fragmented MP4 media formats. Which format and codecs work depends on the target players and the authoring requirements that apply to them. Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices

How adaptive bitrate playback works

A multivariant playlist can offer the same content at different bit rates or resolutions. The player uses the alternatives to select a rendition suited to its current playback conditions, and may change renditions if those conditions shift. This is adaptive bitrate streaming.

Adaptation is a capability, not a guarantee of seamless switching. It depends on the available renditions being prepared appropriately and on the player and delivery path working as intended. If variants are missing, poorly aligned, or unsuitable for the target client, the player may not be able to switch as expected.

Live HLS and HLS for on-demand video

Use What the playlist represents Player behavior
Live A changing window of segments from an ongoing presentation Reloads the media playlist to discover new segments
VOD A fixed presentation with its segments listed Plays the asset; the playlist can signal that it has ended

Both uses follow the playlist-and-segment model. The distinction is whether the media list advances during an ongoing broadcast or describes a completed asset. HLS supports both; using HLS alone does not make a stream live or guarantee a particular latency.

What Low-Latency HLS adds

Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) adds mechanisms intended to reduce the wait between production and playback while retaining HTTP-based delivery. Apple documents partial segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints, and rendition reports. Apple’s Low-Latency HLS guide

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Partial segments let a producer publish part of a segment before the complete segment is ready.
  • Playlist delta updates can omit older playlist information that a client already has.
  • Blocking playlist reloads let a request wait for a playlist update rather than repeatedly checking before new media appears.
  • Preload hints help a player request an upcoming resource.
  • Rendition reports help a player navigate between renditions.

These features require compatible production tools and corresponding server and delivery behavior. Apple says a player can fall back to regular-latency HLS when a server lacks required low-latency configuration support. Apple’s authoring guidance recommends a one-second part target, with the selected target tied to expected client-to-server round-trip time; it is not a promise of one-second end-to-end latency. Do not treat LL-HLS as a single playlist-tag change or assume it guarantees a fixed delay.

Encryption, keys, and protected HLS

HLS playlists can reference encryption keys. Depending on the stream, a client may need authorization to retrieve a key before decrypting and playing segments. Secure delivery therefore involves more than encrypting media: key handling, access control, transport security, and client support all matter.

For protected delivery to Apple devices, Apple’s current authoring specification describes FairPlay Streaming requirements and related encryption constraints. Those requirements are specific to that protected playback context; a playlist’s existence by itself does not show that content is correctly protected. Apple’s authoring specification

What to check when implementing or troubleshooting HLS

When playback fails or behaves inconsistently, inspect each part of the chain: packaging, playlists, segments, delivery, and client support. Apple’s authoring requirements cover areas including segment-duration signaling, alignment across audio and video playlists, playlist types for VOD and event streams, HTTP delivery, transport security, and content protection. Apple also provides tools and resources for HLS segmentation and validation. Apple HLS resources

  • Playlist does not load: Check that the playlist URL is reachable by the player and that HTTP delivery and any required authorization are configured correctly.
  • Playback starts but stalls or stops: Check whether the media playlist is being updated for a live presentation and whether the referenced segments are available and delivered reliably.
  • Quality does not adapt as expected: Confirm that the multivariant playlist advertises appropriate alternatives and that the corresponding media playlists and segments are prepared consistently. Client behavior also affects switching.
  • Audio and video drift or variants switch badly: Review alignment across the relevant audio and video playlists and the packaging of alternate renditions.
  • Low-latency mode has no effect: Verify that production, playlist behavior, server, and delivery path support the required LL-HLS features. A player may fall back to regular HLS if server support is lacking.
  • Protected playback fails: Check client support, authorization, key retrieval, and decryption requirements alongside the playlist and media delivery.

Apple’s platform requirements evolve. Validate generated playlists and segments against the current requirements for the devices you intend to support rather than assuming an old sample playlist is universally correct. For the published protocol specification, see RFC 8216.

HLS compared with keeping a YouTube stream live

HLS is a delivery protocol, not a service for keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock. If your goal is to play uploaded videos continuously as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
