HDMI copy protection usually refers to HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), a technology that checks whether connected devices are authorized to handle protected content and encrypts that audio and video over the connection. It is a device-to-device protocol—not a special kind of HDMI cable and not another name for an HDMI version.

What HDCP does

HDCP is designed to prevent copying of protected digital audio and video as it travels over supported interfaces, including HDMI. A source device, such as a computer or streaming player, communicates with a receiving device such as a TV or monitor. If the content is protected, the devices must establish a valid HDCP connection for playback.

The HDMI-mapped HDCP 2.3 specification from Digital Content Protection LLC describes the protocol; NVIDIA also gives a plain-language definition in its HDCP help page.

How HDCP authentication and encryption work

HDCP does not simply encrypt every signal as soon as an HDMI cable is plugged in. The connected devices first authenticate and exchange keys. The HDCP on HDMI Revision 2.3 specification says encryption must be enabled only after successful completion of the AKE (authentication and key exchange), locality-check, and SKE (session key exchange) stages. Once those stages succeed, protected data is encrypted across the link.

Why devices in the middle of the HDMI chain matter

A receiver in the middle of a setup—such as an AV receiver, switch, splitter, or extender—may act as an HDCP repeater. A repeater authenticates downstream devices and reports topology information upstream, so the source can account for the connected display chain. The specification describes repeater authentication as carrying topology information upstream and content-stream-management information downstream.

That means compatibility is not only a question of whether the source and TV support HDCP. Every device in the signal path must be able to participate successfully. If one component cannot authenticate or support the required HDCP capability, protected playback can fail. The specification also provides for topology updates when the connected-device arrangement changes.

HDCP versions are not HDMI versions

HDCP and HDMI have separate version numbers because they describe different things: HDCP is the content-protection protocol, while HDMI versions describe the interface specification. For example, HDCP 2.3 is not the same designation as HDMI 2.2. HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies HDMI 2.2 as an interface-specification update; it is separate from HDCP.

The W3C Encrypted Media Extensions registry lists Digital Content Protection LLC’s High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection System: Mapping HDCP to HDMI, Revision 2.3, dated February 28, 2018. That confirms the HDMI-mapped revision listed in that registry; it does not, by itself, establish that no later revision exists.

What HDCP compatibility means when versions differ

Version compatibility depends on the implementations involved, so avoid assuming that every device supports every earlier HDCP version. AMD says HDCP 2.3 is backward compatible with HDCP 2.2, while its documentation says HDCP 2.3 supersedes HDCP 1.4 without backward compatibility to it. Some implementations offer selectable HDCP 1.4 and 2.3 support.

AMD presents HDCP 2.3 with UHD and HDCP 1.4 with lower resolutions as a general guideline, not an absolute rule. Check the specifications for the particular source, display, and intermediate devices rather than treating resolution alone as proof of a version requirement.

What to check if protected HDMI content will not play

  1. Check the source and display. Confirm that both list HDCP support, and check their documentation for the supported version. NVIDIA provides a method for verifying whether a system is HDCP-capable.
  2. Include every device in the path. Check any AV receiver, switch, splitter, or extender between the source and display. A repeater or other intermediate device must support the needed HDCP behavior and authenticate its downstream devices.
  3. Isolate the chain. Temporarily connect the source directly to the display, bypassing intermediate components. If playback changes, investigate the removed devices and their documented HDCP support. A symptom such as a black screen alone does not prove that HDCP is the cause.
  4. Consult device-maker documentation. Compare the supported HDCP versions and repeater capabilities for each component; do not infer support from an HDMI version label.

An HDMI cable carries the signal, but it does not add HDCP capability to a source, display, or repeater. Replacing a cable therefore cannot, by itself, resolve a device authentication or compatibility problem.
