What greenrobot EventBus does
EventBus lets components communicate without directly calling or depending on one another. A publisher posts an object describing something that happened or information to share. Subscriber objects register with the bus and declare which event types they handle using methods annotated with @Subscribe. The bus delivers a posted event to matching handlers.
This is an in-process communication mechanism for Java and Android applications. It is not a network message broker, persistent event log, cross-process transport, or guarantee that messages will be delivered after an application stops.
How event delivery works
- Define an event object. Create a Java object for the event or data to be shared. The project’s getting-started example uses a
MessageEventclass. - Write a subscriber handler. Add a public method that returns
void, takes exactly one event parameter, and has the@Subscribeannotation. The annotation can also specify delivery options such as thread mode and priority. - Register the subscriber. Call
register(subscriber)on the EventBus instance. The subscriber stays registered until it is unregistered. - Post an event. Call
post(eventObject). EventBus dispatches it to the matching registered handlers. - Unregister when finished. Call
unregister(subscriber)when that subscriber should no longer receive events.
This abbreviated example illustrates the API; it is not a complete application:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
@Subscribe(threadMode = ThreadMode.MAIN)
public void onMessageEvent(MessageEvent event) {
// Update UI or otherwise handle the event.
}
EventBus.getDefault().register(this);
EventBus.getDefault().post(new MessageEvent());
EventBus.getDefault().unregister(this);
EventBus.getDefault() uses the default singleton instance. Applications can instead construct separate EventBus instances; each instance has its own delivery scope.
Register and unregister Android subscribers with their lifecycle
For an Android Activity or Fragment, registration should match the period in which it is meant to receive events. The project’s example registers in onStart and unregisters in onStop. The right lifecycle callbacks depend on the component and app design.

Leaving a subscriber registered beyond its intended lifetime can result in unwanted event delivery and retained references. Pair registration with cleanup at the appropriate lifecycle boundary rather than treating registration as a one-time setup with no teardown.
Delivery options and sticky events
- Thread mode: A subscriber can configure how its handler receives events. The project’s quick example uses
ThreadMode.MAIN; consult documentation for the version in use for the complete set of modes and their behavior. - Priority: Subscriber methods can specify a priority. The exact implications should be checked against the corresponding version’s API documentation.
- Sticky events:
postStickystores the most recent sticky event of a type in memory so a later subscriber can retrieve it. The API also offers methods to retrieve or remove sticky events. This is a short-lived in-memory convenience, not durable storage. - Separate buses: A newly constructed EventBus instance has a separate event-delivery scope. Use the default singleton when a process-wide bus is appropriate, or distinct instances when the application needs isolated scopes.
What “EventBus” might mean
The name is not unique. greenrobot’s project targets Android and Java, while Guava documents a separate in-process Java EventBus and JavaScript packages also use the EventBus name. Their APIs, platform assumptions, and delivery behavior are not interchangeable. Confirm the publisher, language, and platform before following installation instructions or examples.
