Gravatar (short for “Globally Recognized Avatar”) links a profile image to an email address. When you enter that address on a participating website, the site can request the matching image and display it beside your comment, account name, or other content—without asking you to upload the same picture separately on every site.
What Gravatar is
Gravatar is an online avatar service. You create an account, associate one or more email addresses with it, and upload an image. Websites that support Gravatar can then retrieve the image associated with the email address they collect from you.
WordPress has built-in Gravatar support, but Gravatar is not limited to WordPress. Any compatible service can request an avatar. A site may show the image beside comments, author information, forum posts, or account details.
An image match does not prove that a public Gravatar profile exists. Users can associate multiple email addresses with one account, and an image lookup can succeed even when a profile lookup for the same identifier returns no public profile.

How Gravatar works
- You register an address and image. In Gravatar, you associate an email address with an avatar and optionally complete a public profile.
- A website collects your email address. For example, a comment form may ask for an email address even if it does not display that address publicly.
- The site normalizes the address. Current Gravatar developer guidance says to remove leading and trailing whitespace and convert the address to lowercase.
- The site calculates an identifier. It computes a SHA-256 hash of the normalized address. The hash is an identifier for the lookup, not encryption, and it should not be treated as making the address anonymous.
- The site requests the avatar. The resulting identifier is placed in a Gravatar image URL or profile request. The browser can load the returned avatar like any other image resource.
Because the lookup is tied to an email address, the same avatar can appear on multiple participating sites whenever you provide that address.
SHA-256 versus older MD5 examples
Some older WordPress documentation demonstrates trimming and lowercasing an email before creating an MD5 hash. That is legacy guidance, not the current general Gravatar procedure. Current Gravatar developer documentation specifies SHA-256, and WordPress’s current developer reference notes that Gravatar URLs use SHA-256 as of WordPress 6.8.

If you maintain older code, check its hashing method and update it against the current Gravatar documentation rather than copying an old MD5 example into a new integration.
How WordPress uses Gravatar
WordPress can call Gravatar for comments and other user contexts. Site administrators can control the behavior under the discussion settings:

- Turn avatar display on or off.
- Set the maximum allowed avatar rating.
- Choose the fallback image shown when no matching Gravatar is available.
WordPress’s get_avatar() function can work from several inputs, including a user ID, email address, Gravatar hash, user, post, or comment, and returns the avatar image markup.
A fallback is not evidence that a commenter has a Gravatar account. WordPress can show a fixed default or generate a style-based image for anyone without a matching avatar.

What information is visible
Having a Gravatar account and having a public Gravatar profile are separate decisions. Gravatar’s privacy information identifies the account email address, username, password, uploaded images, information you publish on your profile, and the email hash used to serve an image as data involved in the service. A site requesting an avatar also processes the email address it collected from you.
Gravatar profiles are public by default. Depending on your settings, visitors may be able to open a profile from an avatar or email-based lookup and see the profile information you chose to publish. Public profile access is also relevant to Gravatar’s public API.

Privacy controls to review
- Public avatar visibility: controls whether your avatar can be served publicly.
- Profile visibility: controls access to information on your Gravatar profile.
- Search-engine indexing: lets you discourage search engines from indexing the profile. Changes to search visibility may take time to appear in search results.
If you do not want one image associated across sites, review the public-avatar and profile settings and consider which email address you enter on third-party sites. Using a different address can produce a different Gravatar association, but the requesting site still receives or processes whatever address you provide.

Do you need a Gravatar account?
No. You only need an account if you want to associate an image or profile with an address. A participating site can still display its own default image, or it can request a Gravatar for an address that has a matching image. You can also use a site that stores avatars locally instead of querying Gravatar.
What happens when no matching avatar exists?
The requesting site decides the fallback. In WordPress, an administrator can disable avatars, select a fixed default, or choose a generated avatar style. A default image therefore tells you how that site handles missing matches; it does not tell you whether the person registered with Gravatar.
