GPMI, a multimedia interface developed in China, is listed by HiSilicon at up to 192 Gbps and 480 W peak power—but those headline figures apply only to its proprietary Type-B connector. Its USB-C-compatible variant is listed at 96 Gbps and 240 W. Against HDMI 2.2’s 96 Gbps maximum, Type-B offers twice the bandwidth on paper, not proof that GPMI is replacing HDMI or widely available in consumer devices.
What is GPMI?
GPMI stands for General Purpose Media Interface. Promoted through the Shenzhen 8K UHD Video Industry Cooperation Alliance (SUCA) ecosystem, it is designed to carry audio and video, data, control signals, and power over one connection. HiSilicon describes the interface and publishes specifications for two variants: Type-B and a USB Type-C-compatible version. These are vendor-published capabilities, not independently tested results. HiSilicon’s GPMI overview
How do GPMI and HDMI 2.2 compare?
The headline comparison is between the maximum bandwidth HiSilicon lists for GPMI Type-B and HDMI Licensing Administrator’s maximum for HDMI 2.2. Their connectors and ecosystems are different, so a higher bandwidth figure does not make the interfaces interchangeable.

Does GPMI really offer twice HDMI 2.2’s bandwidth?
On paper, yes: HiSilicon lists GPMI Type-B at up to 192 Gbps, while HDMI Licensing Administrator lists HDMI 2.2 at up to 96 Gbps. The USB-C-compatible GPMI variant is also listed at 96 Gbps, so it does not double HDMI 2.2’s stated maximum.
Bandwidth alone does not determine which interface is right for a device. HDMI 2.2 already lists demanding formats, including uncompressed full-chroma 8K60 and 4K240 at 10- or 12-bit color. A manufacturer’s maximum bandwidth or video-mode listing should not be treated as proof that every cable, source, display, or configuration supports that mode.

What does “near 500 W” mean?
HiSilicon lists 480 W as the peak power for GPMI Type-B—hence “near 500 W”—and 240 W for the USB-C-compatible variant. The figures refer to different GPMI connector variants and should not be combined or attributed to USB-C generally. The cited HDMI 2.2 overview does not state a power-delivery figure for HDMI 2.2.

Not by default. HiSilicon describes Type-B as a proprietary connector form. Its other GPMI variant is described as USB Type-C-compatible, but sharing that connector shape does not establish that every USB-C port, cable, host, or display supports the GPMI protocol. Nor should GPMI be treated as physically or electrically interchangeable with HDMI. HiSilicon lists conversion chips for HDMI and DisplayPort, indicating a conversion-product route rather than direct port equivalence.

There is not enough evidence to say that. HiSilicon lists GPMI-capable system-on-chips for televisions, projectors, and set-top boxes, along with conversion chips and possible commercial-display applications. It also says more than 90 enterprises and institutions have joined the GPMI working group. That is a vendor-reported group membership count, not a count of shipping products, buyers, or independent adopters. HiSilicon’s GPMI overview

On December 11, 2025, IT之家 reported SUCA’s announcement that GPMI series industry standards had been approved and published in China, covering physical layer, protocol, power, security, and interoperability. The report also attributed to SUCA a statement that GPMI had received USB-IF SVID authorization. That authorization is not the same as USB-IF product certification: USB-IF describes certification as a product testing and approval process. What should buyers and device makers take from the specifications?
- Check the exact GPMI variant. The 192 Gbps and 480 W peak figures belong to Type-B; the USB-C-compatible version is listed at 96 Gbps and 240 W.
- Check both ends of the connection. Connector resemblance alone does not establish protocol support, and an HDMI port does not become GPMI-compatible without suitable conversion hardware.
- Verify complete device support. A published interface capability does not show that a particular product implements it, or that the desired video mode works with a particular cable and configuration.
- Keep maturity claims in proportion. Published Chinese standards and listed chips indicate development, but do not by themselves demonstrate widespread retail availability or global adoption.
