GNOME’s current app directory separately lists Text Editor, an everyday editor with documented programming-related features. The available sources do not establish that these are the same application or that gedit is GNOME’s default editor, so it is useful to keep the names distinct.
What is gedit?
The Debian unstable manual describes gedit as an easy-to-use, general-purpose text editor for simple notes and documents, with features that can also help with software development. It documents launching the editor with files and optional line and column positions. That manual describes the gedit package; by itself, it does not establish gedit’s availability or version across Linux distributions.
What is GNOME Text Editor?
GNOME’s app directory calls its current app Text Editor. The listing presents it as a simple editor focused on a pleasing default experience and links to Flathub for installation. It lists version 50.1 as released on May 10, 2026; that version and date refer to the GNOME Text Editor listing, not gedit generally.
The names should not be treated as interchangeable: the cited Debian manual documents gedit, while GNOME’s app listing and project repository describe Text Editor. The sources here do not establish that they are the same application or that gedit remains GNOME’s default.

What can you do with GNOME Text Editor?
The GNOME Text Editor project repository describes an editor built around everyday text editing and session management, with features useful for code and configuration files. Its documented features include:
- Programming and configuration: syntax highlighting for common programming languages, plus support for
.editorconfigand modelines. - Finding and changing text: search and replace, including regular expressions based on PCRE2.
- Writing and output: inline spell checking and document printing.
- Editing preferences: integrated Vim keybindings.
- Desktop integration and continuity: dark mode and saving session state. GNOME’s help also documents drafts and ways to undo, redo or discard edits.
These are editor features, not a claim that Text Editor is a full integrated development environment. The repository also documents dependencies including GTK 4.15+, GtkSourceView 5.10+, Libadwaita 1.6.0+, LibSpelling 0.4.0+ and libeditorconfig. Dependency requirements are project documentation and may change.

Where can you get GNOME Text Editor?
GNOME’s app directory links to Flathub as an installation route for GNOME Text Editor. This does not establish how gedit is packaged on every distribution or make the Flathub route applicable to every package named gedit. Check the listing and your distribution’s software sources for the app you intend to install.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is gedit the same as GNOME Text Editor?
The sources distinguish them by where and how they describe them: gedit appears in the Debian package manual, while GNOME’s app directory and repository describe Text Editor. They do not establish that the applications are identical, so do not assume that instructions or feature lists for one apply to the other. GNOME’s localization project page names Christian Hergert as maintainer and shows main-branch translation data dated September 19, 2026; that indicates translation activity, not a complete account of release or maintenance policy.
