FPS means frames per second: how many successive video frames your stream captures, encodes, or delivers each second. For many ordinary live streams, 30 fps is a practical starting point. Choose 60 fps when smooth fast motion matters and your camera or capture source, encoder, upload connection, and streaming platform can all sustain it. There is no single best frame rate for every stream.
What FPS means in a live stream
A video is made up of still images, or frames, shown in sequence. Frame rate measures how many frames are handled each second. At 30 fps, the stream sends 30 frames per second; at 60 fps, it sends 60. More frames can make motion look smoother, particularly when objects move quickly, but FPS alone does not determine picture quality. Resolution, bitrate, encoding, source quality, and delivery conditions matter too.
Amazon IVS summarizes the relationship this way: “Bitrate, FPS, and resolution are interrelated.” Its streaming configuration documentation and YouTube’s live encoder settings both offer platform-specific guidance rather than one universal setting.
Should you stream at 30 or 60 FPS?
| Consideration | 30 fps | 60 fps |
|---|---|---|
| Motion | Often sufficient for talking-head streams, interviews, slides, and other relatively static scenes. | Can represent fast movement with more frames, making it a stronger candidate for gameplay, sports, or other motion-heavy video. |
| Bitrate and bandwidth | May require less bitrate than 60 fps in some circumstances, but requirements depend on resolution, codec, content, and platform. | Can increase stream demands. It does not automatically require twice the bitrate of 30 fps. |
| Encoding workload | Generally less demanding than encoding the same resolution at 60 fps. | Requires the source and encoder to process more frames; insufficient capacity can cause dropped frames or instability. |
| Platform support | Check the destination’s current limits and guidance for your resolution and codec. | Confirm that the platform, source, and encoding setup support 60 fps at the intended resolution. |
Cloudflare’s live input guidance notes that high-motion, high-frame-rate content typically needs more bitrate than low-motion content such as slides. That is why a mostly static presentation can look fine at 30 fps while fast gameplay may benefit from 60 fps—provided the rest of the pipeline can handle it.

What FPS should you use for streaming?
Use 30 fps as a starting point for an ordinary stream with limited movement. Try 60 fps when smoother motion is important, then verify that your entire setup can hold it without sacrificing stability. Amazon IVS supports rates up to 60 fps, and YouTube’s cited encoder guidance allows up to 60 fps; support varies by platform and setup, so check the current destination documentation.
- Match the rate to the content. Consider the movement viewers will see. Fast gameplay and sports are stronger candidates for 60 fps than a presenter speaking over slides.
- Check every part of the source chain. Confirm that the camera or capture source, encoder software, computer, and destination platform support the resolution and FPS combination you plan to use. The camera’s advertised capability alone does not guarantee a stable stream.
- Choose a platform-appropriate bitrate. Use the current recommendation for your platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate as a starting point. Check that your sustained upload capacity can support it; bitrate recommendations are not interchangeable across providers.
- Rehearse with representative movement and audio. YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate and a pre-stream test. Test the actual setup with motion similar to the live event, then monitor stream health.
- Adjust and test again if needed. If the stream drops frames or becomes unstable, lower the frame rate, resolution, or bitrate as appropriate. Change one or more settings in line with your platform guidance and observed stream health, then rehearse again.

The YouTube values are from its live encoder settings. Google Cloud’s live configuration guidance marks its bitrate table updated September 24, 2026. These tables use different services, ingest pipelines, and assumptions; do not combine them into a universal bitrate formula.
Cloudflare’s current documentation says live creators should typically use a bitrate well under 12 Mbps, while also noting that higher-motion, higher-frame-rate content typically needs more bitrate than low-motion presentations. Treat that as Cloudflare guidance for its service, not a cap or recommendation that applies to every platform.

Why a stream may not sustain its chosen FPS
A frame-rate setting only helps if the complete chain can maintain it. A camera or capture source may not produce the selected rate; an encoder or computer may lack capacity; or the connection may not sustain the required upload. Amazon IVS’s multitrack setup guidance identifies streamer hardware and network limits among relevant constraints, including older GPUs, poor first-mile networks, resource contention, user settings, and codec support. Google Cloud also notes that adding 60 fps ladder steps requires more computing power in its encoding context.
If your current camera cannot capture the rate you want, a 1080p 60fps webcam may be relevant to investigate. Check its specifications and compatibility with your software and system; camera capability alone cannot ensure that the encoder and upload connection will sustain a 60 fps stream.

Troubleshooting FPS and stream stability
| What you see | Possible cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Motion looks less smooth than expected | The source, encoder, or destination may not be using the selected rate, or the content may not benefit much from a higher frame rate. | Check the source and output settings, verify platform support, and make a rehearsal with representative motion. |
| Dropped frames or unstable output | The computer or encoder may be overloaded, or upload capacity may be inadequate for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. | Check stream health and upload capacity; reduce FPS, resolution, or bitrate as appropriate, then test again. |
| The chosen FPS is unavailable | A camera or capture device, software, codec, or destination may not support that setting in the selected configuration. | Check each component’s current specifications and platform limits. Select a supported combination and rehearse it. |
| High-motion scenes look poor despite a high FPS | Higher frame rate does not replace adequate bitrate, encoding capacity, or upload bandwidth. | Compare your settings with the destination’s guidance for the specific codec, resolution, and FPS. Verify sustained upload capacity and test the same kind of motion. |
