Flicker-free A/B testing makes sure a visitor sees the experiment version assigned to them on the page’s first visible render. In a client-side test, the browser can show the original page before the experiment script changes it; preventing that flash means getting the variant ready before the browser paints, or rendering it on the server in the first place.
What causes flicker in an A/B test?
In a browser-based, or client-side, experiment, the page can start rendering before the testing code has chosen or applied a variation. If the browser paints the original content and then replaces it with the test version, the visitor may see a brief flash of original content (FOOC).
The usual sequence is: the page begins loading, experiment code obtains or applies a variation, the code changes page content or styling, and the browser paints the result. Flicker occurs when that paint happens before the variation is ready. Shopify distinguishes FOOC from a flash of unstyled content (FOUC), which occurs while CSS has not loaded.
How can a test prevent flicker?
The main approaches differ in when and where the variant is selected. The right choice depends on whether the variant must affect the initial view, how much delay the page can tolerate, and what the site and testing system support.

| Approach | When the variant is ready | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Server-side or edge rendering | The server selects the visitor’s variant and returns HTML with that version already rendered. | Requires the assignment to be available in the server or edge rendering path; avoids a browser-side replacement step. |
| Client-side render blocking | A small script applies the variant before the browser paints. | Can delay visible content while the script is fetched and run; depends on browser support and reliable script delivery. |
| Anti-flicker hide-and-reveal fallback | The page remains hidden until experiment code runs, or until a timeout reveals it. | Prevents the original page being shown first, but can delay useful content and hurt loading performance. |
Render the selected variant on the server
The backend or edge layer assigns the visitor and sends HTML that already contains the selected version. Because the browser does not need to replace visible original content after loading, this avoids the client-side transition that causes flicker. Shopify describes server-side A/B test content as pre-rendered with the correct variant and says it has no anti-flicker performance cost. Convert’s developer documentation also lists server-side and edge experimentation alongside client-side testing.
This approach depends on the site architecture and experiment system being able to make the assignment before rendering. It is a strong option when the initial visible content must be correct and delaying the browser’s first paint is unacceptable.

Apply the variant before the first paint
For client-side experiments, Google Chrome’s modern-web guidance recommends placing a small experiment script in the document <head>. For an external script, it describes using async with blocking="render": the browser can continue parsing HTML while it fetches the script, but delays painting until the script has executed. The script can set a variant attribute on the root element, and CSS can use that attribute to style the selected version.
Keep the render-blocking work small and fast, and move analytics or other nonvisual work out of it. Chrome’s guidance gives under 100 ms execution time as an example performance budget, not a universal or independently validated threshold.

Use a hide-and-reveal fallback only where needed
A legacy anti-flicker snippet may hide the page until the experiment initializes, sometimes with a timeout that reveals the page if initialization takes too long. Chrome’s guidance characterizes a historical timeout as typically four seconds; that is not a universal recommendation. Hiding the page can prevent visitors from seeing the wrong version, but it also withholds useful content and delays first paint.
Chrome recommends feature-detecting blocking="render" and using a fallback only where native render blocking is unavailable. Avoid combining the fallback with render blocking in browsers that already support the attribute. Shopify advises removing inactive anti-flicker snippets and closing completed tests.

Choose script loading deliberately
Optimizely explains that asynchronous loading reduces the chance that experiment code slows the initial page load, but can allow the original page to appear before the variant and cause flicker. Its Web Experimentation implementation uses a synchronous snippet to prevent flicker while loading variation code asynchronously. This is guidance for that product’s implementation, not a universal rule for every testing platform.

Any approach that holds back the visible page can increase the time before visitors see content. Shopify reports that anti-flicker snippets often add over 2 seconds to First Contentful Paint (FCP); the page does not state a publication year, and this is not a measurement for every site. The actual effect depends on snippet size, experiment code, network conditions, and implementation.

A render-blocking third-party script also makes the initial render depend on that vendor’s resource. Chrome’s guidance warns that a third-party CDN outage could block rendering, and that blocking="render" does not give developers a timeout they control. For performance-critical pages, consider server-side testing. Use render blocking only when the experiment changes initial visible content; analytics and other nonvisual code do not need to block paint.
How should you check for flicker and measure its cost?
- Record a page load: In Chrome DevTools, open the Performance panel and record the page load. Inspect the interval before FCP for time spent waiting on experiment code or a hidden page.
- Compare enabled and disabled states: Measure the page with the experiment active and with its anti-flicker code disabled. This helps identify the snippet’s contribution rather than attributing all loading time to testing.
- Check field data: Review real-user monitoring (RUM) alongside lab results. Chrome’s guidance recommends monitoring both FCP and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP).
- Clean up inactive tests: On a Shopify storefront, disable anti-flicker code when no test is active, close completed tests, and verify the snippet is disabled.
Which browsers support render blocking?
The Chrome guidance reviewed for this article lists blocking="render" support in Chrome 105 (September 2022), Edge 105 (September 2022), and Safari 18.2 (December 2024), and says Firefox does not support it. In unsupported browsers the attribute is ignored, so a client-side test can still flicker unless it uses another fallback or server-side rendering. Browser support can change; verify current compatibility for the browsers your audience uses before relying on this approach.
How does the browser’s render-blocking attribute work?
Google Chrome’s modern-web guidance describes the mechanism this way: “The blocking=render attribute allows a <script> or <link> element placed in the <head> to block rendering—but not parsing—until the resource has been fetched and executed.” The practical implication is that HTML parsing can continue, while the browser waits to paint until the script can apply the visual variant.
