Flashes is an independent photo- and video-sharing app built on the same AT Protocol as Bluesky. It lets people publish posts that are compatible with Bluesky, but it is a separate app—not the official Bluesky client. A TechCrunch report at Flashes’ February 2025 public launch described posts with up to four photos or a video up to one minute long.
What is Flashes?
Flashes is a third-party social app created by Berlin-based developer Sebastian Vogelsang. It was publicly launched in February 2025 as a photo-focused option in the Bluesky ecosystem. Its posts use the AT Protocol, which makes them compatible with Bluesky rather than confining them to an unrelated, separate network. TechCrunch reported nearly 30,000 downloads in Flashes’ first 24 hours; that launch figure is not a current user or download count.
Is Flashes an official Bluesky app?
No. Flashes is an independent developer app, not Bluesky’s official client. Bluesky’s terms identify Bluesky Social, PBC as the provider of the Bluesky service and distinguish it from separate developer applications, which may have their own terms.

Bluesky describes its network as an open system: its help page calls it “a social app that is designed to not be controlled by a single company” and an “open source toolbox for building social apps that can all talk to each other.” In practical terms, apps built on the AT Protocol can connect to a shared social network while offering different ways to use it.

What Bluesky’s audience figure does—and does not—tell you
Bluesky’s FAQ reported more than 44 million users as of May 2026. That is a Bluesky network figure, not a count of Flashes users or proof that every Bluesky user also uses Flashes. The distinction matters when judging the reach a creator might get by posting through the app.

Who should consider Flashes?
Flashes may suit someone who wants a photo-focused way to post into the Bluesky network, especially if reaching Bluesky users matters more than publishing solely within a standalone photo-sharing service. Someone who needs verified current media limits, a particular mobile platform, or specific privacy settings should confirm those points in current Flashes documentation before switching workflows.
