Extended desktop mode makes multiple displays act as separate parts of one larger desktop. You can keep different windows on each screen and move them between displays. In duplicate (or clone) mode, each display instead shows the same desktop image.
What extended desktop mode means
Intel describes extended desktop as a larger Windows desktop that spans multiple display devices. In practice, each connected screen provides its own workspace area: for example, you could keep a document on one display and a browser on another. The screens are separate areas of the desktop, not independent computers.
Extended mode can allow displays to use different resolutions, color depths, and refresh rates, according to Intel’s multiple-display FAQ. AMD also documents using different resolutions, refresh rates, and orientations. Whether a particular combination is available depends on the computer’s graphics hardware and connections.

Intel’s resolution guidance says clone mode uses a resolution supported by all displays, while extended mode permits separate resolutions for each monitor. This describes Intel’s guidance; available settings depend on the specific hardware configuration. See Intel’s resolution guidance.

How to enable extended mode in Windows
For most Windows systems
- Connect the displays to the computer, then open Settings > System > Display.
- Select a detected display in the arrangement diagram. If the screens are not obvious, use the option to identify them.
- Open the multiple-display options and choose Extend desktop to this display, then apply the change if prompted.
- Drag the display boxes so their positions match the physical arrangement on your desk. This makes the pointer cross between screens in the expected direction.
These steps follow AMD’s Windows instructions. Labels and menus can vary with Windows versions and graphics drivers.
For older Intel Graphics Control Panel systems
Intel’s legacy procedure is to open Display > Multiple Displays, select Extended Desktop, and apply the change. That article applies to systems using the older Intel Graphics Control Panel and is scoped to fifth-generation Intel systems and older; it should not be treated as the current procedure for other hardware. What determines whether your computer can use it
The words “extended desktop” do not guarantee support for a particular number of screens, resolution, or refresh rate. Those limits depend on the exact computer, its graphics hardware, available outputs, and any dock or adapter in the connection path. Check the computer maker’s specifications for the model, including supported display count and port capabilities. Intel also notes that some laptop manufacturers may restrict which display can be set as primary; its multiple-display FAQ directs users to their computer manufacturer for system-specific support.

Do not assume that an available connector alone means every monitor combination will work. Verify that the computer supports the desired displays and their settings before choosing a cable, adapter, dock, or additional monitor.

If a connected display does not appear
- In Windows Display Settings, refresh or select the option to detect displays.
- Check that graphics drivers are installed and that the display is connected to the graphics card as appropriate for the computer.
- Confirm that the computer, display, and any dock or adapter support the connection and display mode you want.
- Check the computer manufacturer’s specifications for maximum display count and supported output capabilities.
AMD recommends checking detection, driver installation, and the connection to the graphics card when a display is missing from the list. Its configuration guidance is written for Windows; exact troubleshooting controls can vary by system.
Choosing a monitor for an extended desktop
An additional monitor can expand the available workspace, but compatibility is specific to the computer and connection setup. First confirm the computer supports the number of screens and the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use. Then check the ports on both the computer and monitor, and verify any dock or adapter requirements against their specifications. There is no universally compatible monitor or connector established by the mode itself.
