Expo Go, the Expo SDK, Expo Router, and EAS are related, but they are not the same product—and none of them is a new programming language. Expo is an open-source framework and tool ecosystem for building React Native apps. You can use the parts that help your project without signing up for every Expo service.
What is Expo?
Expo brings together tools for developing React Native apps that run natively on Android and iOS, as well as on the web. Its framework includes an SDK of native modules, command-line tools, Prebuild, and development options such as Expo Go. These pieces coordinate common app-development tasks around React Native rather than replacing React Native itself. See Expo’s core concepts and its development workflow overview.
An “Expo app” is a React Native app that uses Expo tools. One project might use a single Expo package; another might use several tools together. Using Expo does not require using every part of its ecosystem.
Why does Expo exist?
React Native apps need to connect JavaScript code with native platform capabilities. Expo provides a coordinated set of native modules and development tools for that work, so a developer can choose from established building blocks and workflows rather than assembling every piece independently. The project remains a React Native app, and the Expo tools used can vary by project.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters when choosing a workflow: the framework and tools are not the same as a particular app runtime or a cloud build service. Expo Go is one runtime option for learning and quick experiments; a development build is a customizable app build for ongoing development. EAS is a separate, optional services suite.
What is Expo Go?
Expo Go is a prebuilt app that acts as a playground for running a project’s JavaScript. It contains a fixed set of native libraries, so JavaScript in the project can use native functionality already included in Expo Go. It cannot gain a newly added native library just because the project’s JavaScript bundle changes. Expo describes this distinction in its development builds FAQ.

That makes Expo Go convenient for learning and trying ideas, but it is not a universal runtime for every app. If a project needs a native library or configuration that Expo Go does not contain, you need an app build that includes those project-specific native parts.
Expo Go vs. a development build
| Aspect | Expo Go | Development build |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Learning and quick experiments | Ongoing, production-oriented app development |
| Native libraries | Fixed set bundled with Expo Go | Can include the project’s native libraries |
| Native configuration | Limited to what the prebuilt app supports | Can use configuration specific to the app |
| Role in development | A quick way to run JavaScript against an existing native runtime | The app’s own customizable runtime, suitable for the full development and release cycle |
A development build is a build of your own app, with the native libraries and configuration that project needs. Expo recommends this approach for production-oriented development; Expo Go still has a useful role when learning or prototyping.

When should you move from Expo Go to a development build?
Start with Expo Go if you are learning React Native with Expo or want to try an idea using the native libraries it already contains. Move to a development build when the app needs a native dependency or app-specific native configuration that Expo Go cannot provide, or when you are building with a production-oriented workflow.
Can you use Expo with an existing React Native app?
Yes. Expo tools and EAS can be added to an existing React Native project; starting a new Expo project is not a prerequisite. The exact changes depend on the tools you choose. Expo’s overview of using Expo with existing React Native apps explains this path.

Is EAS the same as Expo, and is it mandatory?
No. Expo is the framework and tool ecosystem; Expo Application Services (EAS) is a complementary suite of services for tasks such as building, submitting, and updating apps, as well as hosting and workflow needs. EAS is optional: Expo framework tools are free to use independently, and a project does not have to use every EAS service. See the EAS overview.
EAS Build creates installable Android and iOS binaries using hosted builds. If you prefer to compile on your own machine, local builds are another route and use the local platform toolchains. The choice is whether you want to manage those native build tools locally or use hosted builds—not whether your app is an Expo app.

Which Expo path should you choose?
- Learning or quick prototype: Use Expo Go if its bundled native libraries cover what you want to try.
- App-specific native needs or production-oriented development: Create a development build so the runtime can include your project’s native libraries and configuration.
- Existing React Native app: Adopt the Expo tools that fit the project; you do not need to replace it with a new project.
- Building Android or iOS binaries: Choose EAS Build for hosted builds or local compilation with the platform toolchains. EAS is not a requirement for using Expo.
For current setup steps, follow Expo’s project-creation guide or the documentation for the workflow you choose; commands and setup details can depend on the current SDK and project configuration.
