Ethernet Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) is a carrier-provided Internet connection that links a customer’s local area network (LAN) to the public Internet over a dedicated high-speed facility. The Federal Communications Commission’s 2016 wording is: “Continuous, high-bandwidth connectivity between customers’ LANs and the public Internet.” The name describes an Internet access service—not a particular cable, route, speed, or service-level agreement (SLA).
What does Ethernet DIA mean in networking?
In this term, Ethernet refers to the carrier service interface and delivery framework, while dedicated Internet access describes the connection’s purpose: carrying traffic between a customer’s LAN and the public Internet. The FCC’s 2016 definition is available in its report on Ethernet services. MEF, the industry organization that defines Carrier Ethernet services, includes Dedicated Internet Access among its use cases; its framework describes service attributes and interfaces rather than requiring one universal physical network build. See MEF’s Carrier Ethernet materials.
Carrier Ethernet and Ethernet DIA are related but not interchangeable terms. Carrier Ethernet is a standards-based Layer 2 service framework that can be used to deliver DIA. The label “Ethernet DIA” alone does not specify the access technology, route, performance commitment, or equipment at the customer’s premises.

“Dedicated” describes the service’s dedicated high-speed facility or dedicated service characteristics. It does not, by itself, prove that the customer has an exclusive fiber strand from end to end. Nor does the term establish a particular last-mile technology, symmetrical speeds, uncontended capacity, uptime target, repair time, or SLA. Ethernet providers can use different protocols and media in access and transport, and the physical design can vary.

Some individual offers do specify characteristics such as symmetrical bandwidth, uncontended capacity, or fiber delivery. For example, a UK Government Digital Marketplace definition describes one product, Ethernet Access Direct, as dedicated symmetrical bandwidth over uncontended fiber. That is a product-specific specification for its stated context, not a universal definition of DIA. The service definition should not be treated as a market-wide promise.
Ask the carrier what is dedicated, where traffic is aggregated, what access medium and route are used, and which performance commitments are written into the contract.

How is Ethernet DIA different from broadband or private Ethernet?
| Service | What it connects | What the name alone establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet DIA | A customer LAN to the public Internet | Internet access delivered as a carrier service; confirm bandwidth, route, and SLA in the offer. |
| Ordinary broadband | A customer location to an Internet provider | The category alone does not settle whether the service is shared or what its SLA provides; compare the actual offer. |
| Private Ethernet | Sites or networks to one another | A private connectivity service, not Internet access simply because it uses Ethernet. |
MEF distinguishes private Ethernet architectures such as point-to-point E-Line and multipoint E-LAN from Internet access. See MEF’s E-Line and E-LAN service descriptions. Ethernet may also refer to a network interface or technology family; Ethernet DIA is not simply a patch cable or a customer router.
DIA and a leased line are not safe synonyms without knowing how a particular provider uses those terms. The label does not reveal the exact route, physical medium, or contractual commitments. Check the service description and SLA rather than inferring them from the name.

What should you compare when buying dedicated Internet?
Availability and commercial terms depend on the premises and provider. Request the following details in writing so you can compare offers on the same basis:
- Committed bandwidth: Confirm upload and download rates, whether they are symmetrical, and whether a quoted burst rate is separate from the committed rate.
- SLA and remedies: Check the availability target, measurement period, fault-response and restoration targets, exclusions, and service credits.
- Access and route: Ask whether access is fiber or another medium, whether the site is on-net or off-net, where the handoff occurs, and whether a third party supplies any last-mile segment.
- Resilience: Find out whether the circuit, building entry, power, and upstream route have diverse paths, and what failover is included.
- Handoff and IP service: Confirm the Ethernet interface, IP address allocation, routing options, and whether you must provide a firewall or router.
- Commercial terms: Compare installation lead time, one-time charges, contract length, renewal and termination terms, and total recurring cost.
These are questions for evaluating a specific offer, not standard DIA specifications. MEF’s framework makes service attributes and interfaces explicit, while the FCC describes Ethernet offerings as varying by medium and bandwidth.
