Endpoint detection and response (EDR) is a cybersecurity capability that monitors endpoint devices for suspicious events, helps security teams investigate potential incidents, and supports actions to contain and follow up on them. It is not simply another name for antivirus: EDR focuses on detecting and investigating activity and enabling response, while the way protection and response features are packaged varies by product.

What does endpoint detection and response mean?

EDR covers monitoring and control of endpoint devices as part of the cybersecurity lifecycle. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) describes the capability as spanning endpoint event and incident detection through attack response, incident follow-up, and analysis. Endpoints can include workstations, servers, laptops, thin clients, and virtual desktops. CISA’s CDM Technical Volume 2 sets out this capability scope.

The term describes a security capability, not one fixed product architecture or a guarantee that every activity on every device will be recorded. NIST lists “Endpoint Detection and Response” in its glossary and points to NIST SP 1800-24C and NIST SP 800-66r2 for context; it advises readers to consult the referenced source document when interpreting a term and definition. NIST CSRC’s glossary entry provides those references.

How does EDR work?

A typical EDR workflow moves from device signals to investigation and response. The exact mechanics depend on the product, but the practical sequence is:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Collect endpoint signals. The system receives information about activity on devices, such as process execution, logins, or file and network events. Some approaches also combine endpoint data with network events.
  2. Detect suspicious activity. The product analyzes available signals to identify events or behaviors that may indicate an attack.
  3. Correlate alerts. Related alerts can be grouped so analysts can review a broader incident rather than treating every alert as unrelated.
  4. Investigate. Security staff examine the evidence, affected devices, and related activity to understand what happened and how far it may have spread.
  5. Respond and follow up. Depending on the product and deployment, teams may take actions to contain activity, then review the incident and use the findings to inform further work.

This is a useful way to understand the capability, not a required technical design. CISA’s TIC 3.0 Remote User Use Case says EDR tools can combine endpoint and network event data to help detect malicious activity.

What data can an EDR product use?

Telemetry varies by product. As one vendor example, Microsoft says Defender for Endpoint collects behavioral telemetry that can include process information, network activity, kernel and memory-manager information, user logins, and registry and file-system changes. That list describes Microsoft’s product documentation; it is not a universal sensor specification for all EDR tools.

Microsoft also says its product does not aim to log every operation or activity on an endpoint. An EDR console therefore should not be treated as a complete recording of everything a device has ever done. Its visibility depends on what the product collects and how it is deployed.

What can EDR do in response to a threat?

Response options depend on the specific product, license, and deployment. In Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, documented examples include isolating a device, stopping and quarantining a file, and running an antivirus scan; Microsoft notes that available manual actions differ by plan. These are examples, not actions that every EDR solution necessarily provides.

Microsoft describes alerts being grouped into incidents when they share techniques or are attributed to the same attacker. Its documentation characterizes Defender for Endpoint’s EDR capabilities as providing “advanced attack detections that are near real-time and actionable.” That is Microsoft’s description of its own product, not a definition or performance claim for EDR generally. See Microsoft Learn’s overview of endpoint detection and response capabilities for product-specific details.

Is EDR the same as antivirus?

No. The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable. Antivirus generally refers to protection against malicious software, while EDR describes a broader capability for detecting suspicious endpoint activity, investigating alerts, and supporting response. A product may include both kinds of capability, but vendors package and name features differently. Microsoft, for example, distinguishes next-generation protection from EDR in its product overview; that distinction illustrates Microsoft’s architecture rather than setting a universal industry boundary.

What limits EDR visibility?

Coverage depends on which devices are included, what telemetry the product can collect, and whether devices can communicate with the service. CISA cautions that remote devices may only intermittently provide telemetry or receive updated endpoint policies. A remote endpoint that is offline or poorly connected may therefore not provide continuous visibility or receive policy changes promptly.

When evaluating an EDR deployment, check whether it covers the organization’s endpoint types and operating systems, how it handles remote devices, which endpoint and network signals are available, how analysts can investigate and correlate activity, and which response actions are included in the relevant plan. Also consider how the endpoint data feeds into broader enterprise monitoring. These checks help clarify what a particular solution can do without assuming that all EDR products offer identical coverage or controls.
