End-user computing (EUC) is the collection of devices, applications, access technologies, policies, and processes that let people use work technology—and let IT manage and secure it. In plain language, EUC is both the digital workspace employees use and the systems that make that workspace available. Its precise boundaries vary by organization, but EUC is broader than virtual desktops or cloud-hosted desktops.
What does EUC mean?
EUC stands for end-user computing. Amazon Web Services defines it as a combination of technologies, policies, and processes for giving a workforce secure remote access to the applications, desktops, and data needed for work. Google Cloud and TechTarget describe the subject more broadly, including user devices and the ways organizations manage them. The term does not have one fixed boundary across every organization or vendor, so teams should clarify what they include when discussing an EUC program.
In practical terms, EUC covers the user-facing computing environment and the IT work behind it: making resources available, managing devices and access, and protecting applications and data. AWS’s EUC overview, Google Cloud’s explanation, and TechTarget’s definition reflect these related but not identical ways of using the term.
What does an EUC environment include?
The exact inventory depends on the organization, but EUC commonly includes the following parts:

- Endpoints: Laptops, desktop PCs, smartphones, tablets, and thin clients that people use to access work resources. An endpoint may be organization-managed or personally owned, depending on policy and setup.
- Operating systems and business applications: The software people use on their devices, through a remote desktop, or through a separately delivered application.
- Access and delivery methods: Ways to connect users to applications, desktops, and data, including local device access, virtual desktops, and application streaming or virtualization.
- Management and security: Tools, policies, and processes for configuring devices, managing access, and protecting the resources users reach.
Physical devices remain part of EUC even when some applications or desktops run elsewhere. A thin client, for example, can be the endpoint a person uses to reach a virtual desktop; it does not make the device itself the whole EUC environment. AWS’s EUC Lens definitions and Google Cloud’s overview describe these components and delivery approaches.
How is EUC different from VDI and DaaS?
EUC is the broader environment and management domain. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and desktop as a service (DaaS) are particular ways of delivering desktops within that environment, not synonyms for EUC.

| Term | Meaning | How it relates to EUC |
|---|---|---|
| EUC | The user-facing computing environment and the technologies, policies, and processes used to provide and manage it. | The umbrella term; it can include physical endpoints, applications, endpoint management, and hosted or virtualized delivery. |
| VDI | Desktop environments run on centralized infrastructure and are presented to users remotely. | One desktop delivery approach within an EUC environment. |
| DaaS | A hosted desktop delivery model offered as a service. | Another desktop delivery approach. A provider may offer flexible operating-system or infrastructure choices; pay-as-you-go pricing is one possible model, not a defining feature of all EUC. |
| Application virtualization or streaming | An application is delivered to a user without necessarily delivering a complete hosted desktop in the same way. | An application-delivery approach that can be part of EUC without making the entire desktop virtual. |
A useful distinction is whether the organization is providing a complete desktop or just access to an application. AWS discusses application streaming and DaaS in its guidance on delivering desktops as a service; Google Cloud also identifies application virtualization as part of the EUC landscape.
What is EUC used for?
Organizations use EUC approaches to give people access to the devices, applications, desktops, and data needed for their work, while managing how those resources are provisioned and secured. Depending on the design, an organization might support work on laptops and phones, provide a remotely accessible desktop, or deliver a specific application without hosting the user’s full desktop.

For example, Microsoft describes Windows 365 as streaming a Windows desktop, apps, settings, and content from Microsoft’s cloud to a Cloud PC. The service description says it can be accessed from Windows, iOS, and Android devices. That makes Windows 365 an example of a cloud-hosted desktop service—not a definition of EUC. See Microsoft’s Windows 365 service description for the product details.
Does EUC mean virtual desktops or cloud desktops?
No. Virtual desktops and cloud-hosted desktops are options within EUC, but the term can also cover physical endpoints, applications, endpoint management, and the policies used to control access. An organization with laptops and locally installed applications still has an EUC environment even if it does not use VDI or DaaS.

Nor does moving a desktop to a provider’s cloud guarantee better security, lower costs, or a better user experience. AWS describes keeping sensitive data on a virtual desktop and using a thin client to access a personal virtual desktop as possible use cases. Those outcomes depend on the architecture, controls, user needs, and operating costs; they are not automatic properties of DaaS or EUC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should an organization choose an EUC approach?
There is no single EUC architecture that fits every organization. When comparing physical endpoints, virtual desktops, DaaS, or application delivery, assess the actual workload and operating context across these areas:
Best Value

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Device and application coverage: Which devices, operating systems, and applications must be supported? Does a user need a complete desktop or only particular applications?
- User experience and network dependence: How will the chosen approach perform for users’ tasks and locations, and what happens when connectivity is poor or unavailable?
- Security controls and data location: Where will data reside, how will users and devices be authenticated, and which organization controls will protect access?
- Administration and support: What work will IT take on to provision, configure, update, troubleshoot, and secure devices or hosted environments?
- Scalability and provisioning: How quickly can access be provided or changed as staffing and workloads shift?
- Licensing and total cost: Compare the full cost of the selected design rather than assuming a hosted service or thin client is automatically less expensive.
These criteria help frame a comparison; they do not establish universal rankings. AWS presents DaaS as one approach to desktop delivery and flexible work, but the appropriate choice depends on the organization’s requirements and implementation.
Does EUC refer to a company or product?
Usually, “end-user computing” refers to a technology domain, not one specific product. The name has also appeared in company and organizational contexts. For example, NIST’s Zero Trust Architecture project documentation notes that VMware’s former End User Computing division was divested and reformed as Omnissa LLC. That corporate reference is separate from the general meaning of EUC. See NIST’s Zero Trust Architecture documentation.
