In IEEE 1394 (FireWire), dynamic node addressing is the automatic assignment of a physical node ID to each device during bus self-identification. The ID locates a device on the current bus; it is not a permanent identity, and it may change after a bus reset or topology change.
How IEEE 1394 assigns node IDs
When the bus initializes or resets—for example, after a device is added or removed—nodes clear earlier topology information and configure the bus again. The process has two key stages:
- Tree identification: Nodes establish parent-child relationships in the bus topology, and a root is selected.
- Self-identification: Nodes identify themselves, receive physical node IDs, and communicate topology and capability information. An IEEE tutorial describes this stage as one that “assigns physical node number (Node ID), exchange speed capabilities with neighbors, broadcast basic capabilities.”
Once configuration is complete, devices use the resulting topology and IDs for normal bus arbitration and transactions. A later reset or topology change can trigger another assignment.
What a node ID identifies
IEEE 1394 uses a 16-bit node ID made up of a 10-bit bus ID and a 6-bit physical ID. The physical ID is assigned during self-identification and identifies a node on that bus. RFC 2734 distinguishes it from the device’s 64-bit node unique ID, also called an EUI-64, which identifies the node among manufactured serial-bus nodes. See IETF RFC 2734.

These are different from an IP address, which belongs to a higher networking layer. A FireWire physical node ID is a temporary bus locator—not a MAC or IP address and not a reliable permanent device identity.
Why the ID can change after a reset
A reset causes the bus to reconfigure, so a device may receive a different physical ID. RFC 3146 warns that a node_ID may change after a bus reset and recommends clearing mapping caches. Software that tracks devices should therefore discard and rebuild mappings after reconfiguration rather than assume an old physical ID still refers to the same node. See IETF RFC 3146.

Scope of the term
“Dynamic node addressing” can describe processes in other protocols, including AppleTalk’s distinct startup procedure for choosing and checking a node ID. Here, it refers specifically to IEEE 1394 / FireWire bus initialization, tree identification, and self-identification.
