Dynamic memory allocation is the process of obtaining memory while a program is running, so the program can use an amount suited to its needs at that point rather than one fixed when it was built. It is often explained using the heap or free store, but allocation and eventual reclamation work differently across programming languages.

What dynamic memory allocation means

A program may not know in advance how much data it will need to handle. Dynamic allocation lets it request memory during execution, such as after learning the size of an input or creating data that must outlive the function that created it. Arm Learning Paths defines it as allocating memory while a program runs without knowing the required amount at build time: Arm’s explanation of dynamic memory allocation.

The key idea is lifetime as well as size. Function-local automatic storage is associated with a function’s execution and is no longer available when that execution ends. If data must persist beyond that scope, a program needs a suitable lifetime strategy; dynamic allocation is one way to provide storage whose lifetime is not limited to the function’s stack frame.

Heap and stack: a useful model

Many explanations distinguish function-local stack storage from dynamically allocated heap or free-store memory. Microsoft Learn describes the heap as separate from code and stack in its programming overview, and Arm uses the heap to explain runtime allocation. These terms are useful models for understanding programs, not a promise that every language standard requires the same physical memory layout.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How allocation and reclamation differ by language

Dynamic allocation describes when memory is obtained; it does not mean that every language requires the programmer to release it manually. The interface, ownership rules, and reclamation mechanism depend on the language.

Language Common allocation approach How lifetime or reclamation is handled
C malloc and related library functions The program ordinarily returns allocated storage with free. The API and ownership conventions determine which part of the program is responsible. See Microsoft Learn’s heap-allocation overview.
C++ new and delete can allocate and release objects; standard-library ownership abstractions are also commonly used. delete releases memory and invokes the destructor where applicable. RAII ties resource release to an owning object’s destructor. The usual operator new throws std::bad_alloc when it cannot allocate. See Microsoft Learn on new and delete and Microsoft Learn on RAII.
Java new creates objects. The runtime garbage collector reclaims objects; Java has no explicit free function for objects. See Oracle’s overview of the Java language environment.

Why programs use dynamic allocation

  • Runtime-sized data: The program can request storage after it learns how much data it must handle.
  • Longer-lived data: An allocation can support data that needs to remain available after the function that created it returns, subject to that language’s lifetime and ownership rules.
  • Flexible data structures: Programs can create objects or structures as they are needed rather than relying only on storage fixed in advance.

What to watch for

  • Ownership: In languages with explicit release, the program needs a clear rule for who is responsible for returning an allocation. Losing track of it can cause a memory leak.
  • Lifetime errors: Releasing memory too soon or continuing to use it after its lifetime ends can make a program incorrect. In C++, RAII helps connect resource lifetime to an owning object’s lifetime.
  • Allocation failure: A request may not succeed. In C++, the usual operator new reports insufficient memory by throwing std::bad_alloc.

In short

Dynamic memory allocation obtains storage during program execution, often to accommodate runtime-sized data or data that must outlive a local function scope. The heap is a common explanatory model, while responsibility for reclamation ranges from explicit release in C, through C++ ownership techniques, to Java’s garbage collector.
