Dotdot is a common application language for describing what IoT devices are and how they behave. It is based on the Zigbee Cluster Library (ZCL), but it is not itself a network. Thread is one network technology that can carry an application layer such as Dotdot, so the two names refer to different parts of an IoT system.

What is Dotdot?

Thread Group describes Dotdot as “a standardized set of device definitions, behaviors, and security models.” In practical terms, it gives devices a shared way to express what they do and how to interpret commands or state. For example, an application language can define lighting functions such as whether a light is on and how bright it should be. That shared vocabulary can help devices and software from different makers understand one another.

Dotdot is based on the Zigbee Cluster Library (ZCL), which was developed to describe device behavior in Zigbee. Dotdot was presented as a more user-friendly, network-agnostic framing of that common language: the idea is to separate the meaning of device messages from the particular network carrying them. This is an architectural goal, not a guarantee that every product exposes the same features or works with every other product.

Thread Group’s Dotdot explanation gives the definition and describes the ZCL relationship.

How does Dotdot work with Thread?

Think of the network as the route messages take between devices, and the application language as the instructions for what those messages mean. This is an analogy: Thread carries network traffic, while Dotdot describes device functions and behavior. A Thread network can support application layers above it; the Thread Group resource page lists Dotdot alongside other application-layer options, including IoTivity and KNX IoT.

Accordingly, “Thread device” does not automatically mean “Dotdot device.” Thread identifies the network technology; Dotdot identifies a possible application language. A particular device or system must explicitly support the relevant application layer for the distinction to matter in practice.

Thread Group’s resources page describes Thread’s support for multiple application layers. Historical announcements also described a Dotdot-over-Thread specification, but an announcement is not proof of current product availability or adoption.

Is Dotdot the same as Zigbee or Matter?

Term What it refers to How it relates to Dotdot
Dotdot An application language for device definitions, behaviors, and security models. Based on the Zigbee Cluster Library and framed to work across networks.
Zigbee A wireless networking ecosystem that uses ZCL to describe device behavior. ZCL is the technical foundation Dotdot builds on; Dotdot is not simply another name for Zigbee.
Thread An IP network technology for IoT devices. Can carry an application layer such as Dotdot; it is not the Dotdot language.
Matter A separate CSA smart-home standard. Related through the standards organization and ecosystem, but not synonymous with Dotdot.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), formerly the Zigbee Alliance, now presents a broader standards portfolio that includes Zigbee and Matter. Its current homepage and developer-resource index still list Dotdot, but that listing alone does not establish current certification, deployment scale, or retail availability.

CSA announced the Matter name for Project CHIP on May 11, 2021. In that announcement about the first Matter specification release, CSA identified Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Thread as networking technologies, and Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning. That announcement establishes Matter’s original release framing; it does not make Matter another name for Dotdot or describe every current Matter capability. See the CSA Matter announcement.

What devices use Dotdot?

The official pages cited here do not identify a current Dotdot-certified retail device or provide a current Dotdot compatibility catalog. The Thread Group explainer names products and companies in a historical discussion of Zigbee and ZCL interoperability, but those examples do not establish that a present-day model supports Dotdot or holds Dotdot certification.

For a specific device, look for an explicit Dotdot support statement in the product’s documentation and, where relevant, a current certification record. Do not infer support from a generic Zigbee, Thread, or Matter label: those labels identify different technologies or standards, not verified Dotdot compatibility.

Is Dotdot still in use?

The available official information supports a careful answer, not a categorical one. CSA’s developer resources continue to list Dotdot, and Thread Group’s materials explain its intended role over Thread. Those pages show that the name remains in the organizations’ resource material; they do not establish how widely Dotdot is deployed today, whether current products are being certified, or whether a particular vendor continues to implement it. The evidence available here therefore does not justify calling Dotdot either broadly active or discontinued.
