Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Direct-attached storage (DAS) is a storage device connected directly to the computer or server that uses it, rather than reached through a network device. It may be a USB external drive or a multi-drive enclosure connected to a server through a host bus adapter (HBA).
What makes storage “direct-attached”?
DAS describes how a host reaches storage, not a particular drive size or connector. Cisco’s UCS Manager Storage Management Guide, Release 6.0 describes DAS as storage connected directly to a computer, with no network device between them. In an earlier guide, Cisco gives the example of drive enclosures connected to a computer through an HBA and explains: “Between those two points there is no network device (like a switch or router).” Cisco UCS Manager GUI Configuration Guide, Release 3.1: Direct Attached Storage.
The host may be an ordinary computer or a server. The storage may be one external drive or an enclosure containing multiple drives; the defining feature is the direct connection to the host.
Common examples of DAS
- External drive: A USB hard drive attached to a computer is a familiar DAS example. Seagate describes a DAS drive as external storage connected directly through an interface such as USB or eSATA. Seagate BlackArmor DAS Drive FAQs.
- Server enclosure: A server can connect to a multi-drive enclosure through an HBA. This is still DAS even though the enclosure contains several drives.
- Storage attached to a NAS: A DAS drive plugged into a NAS is directly attached to that NAS. The NAS can then make the storage available to other devices through its network service, depending on its software and configuration.
How DAS differs from NAS and SAN
The key distinction is the access path: DAS connects storage to a host; NAS provides storage over a network-oriented file service; and a storage area network (SAN) provides storage connectivity over a storage network. These categories describe architectures, not guaranteed performance or data-protection levels.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Type | How a device reaches the storage | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| DAS | Direct connection to the computer or server using it | A USB drive attached to a computer, or an enclosure attached to a server |
| NAS | Over a network through a file service | Multiple devices access storage made available by a NAS |
| SAN | Through a storage network | Hosts connect to storage within a networked storage architecture |
A DAS enclosure can have multiple drives, so “direct-attached” does not mean “one disk only.” Likewise, connecting a DAS device to a NAS does not by itself make the drive a network service: the NAS’s software and configuration determine whether other devices can access it.
What to check before connecting a DAS device
Interfaces vary. Cisco’s documentation lists technologies including ATA, SATA, eSATA, SCSI, SAS, USB, USB 3.0, IEEE 1394, and Fibre Channel; the specific device and host must support a compatible connection. Cisco UCS Manager Storage Management Guide, Release 6.0: Direct Attached Storage.

- Confirm that the host has a compatible port or controller and that the enclosure supports it.
- Check that the drive type and filesystem are supported by the host or NAS.
- If attaching storage to a NAS, follow that product’s instructions for making the drive available and disconnecting it safely. For Seagate NAS OS, the manual says to use Eject before disconnecting a DAS device to avoid filesystem damage; this is product-specific guidance, not a universal menu path. Seagate NAS Ports And Direct-Attached Storage.
Does DAS mean faster, cheaper, or safer storage?
Not by itself. DAS identifies the connection arrangement; it does not establish a particular speed, price, reliability, or redundancy level. Those depend on the actual host, interface, drives, enclosure, configuration, and workload. Compare product specifications and the data-protection features you need rather than inferring them from the DAS label.
