Digital satellite radio is audio programming transmitted digitally from satellites to fixed, mobile, or portable receivers. It is commonly called satellite radio; in U.S. regulation, the technical term is Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service (SDARS).
What digital satellite radio means
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) defines SDARS as a service that sends digital audio programming from one or more space stations to receiving stations. The agency calls it “satellite radio” and describes programming such as music, entertainment, news, sports, weather, and data services. That description appears in an FCC order dated September 11, 2009; its subscriber count of more than 19 million U.S. customers is historical, not a current market figure. How satellite radio works
A provider distributes audio to satellites, which transmit the signal to compatible receivers. Receivers are used in cars, trucks, boats, aircraft, homes, and portable settings. A particular vehicle or device still needs a receiver compatible with the service and an available signal.
The FCC’s regulatory description also allows for complementary terrestrial transmitters and satellite-control facilities. In its 2025 annual filing, SiriusXM describes its system as including satellites and terrestrial facilities, studios, and radios. The company reported that satellites SXM-9 and SXM-10 entered service in January and July 2025, respectively; those fleet details can change over time. SiriusXM 2025 annual filing

Why terrestrial repeaters are used
Satellite signals can be obstructed by buildings, foliage, tunnels, and terrain, or disrupted by reflected signals. Terrestrial repeaters retransmit the satellite-provided signal to help maintain reception in locations where direct satellite visibility is limited. They supplement satellite delivery rather than creating a separate local radio network. FCC explanation of repeaters
SiriusXM reported operating more than 1,000 terrestrial repeaters in the United States in its 2025 annual filing. That is a company-reported infrastructure figure, not a guarantee of reception in any particular place.

Satellite radio versus internet streaming
| Listening method | How audio is delivered | What the listener uses | Signal consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Satellite radio | Digital audio is transmitted from satellites to a receiver. | A compatible satellite-radio receiver | Obstructions can limit direct satellite reception; terrestrial repeaters can help in some locations. |
| Internet streaming | Audio is delivered over an internet connection. | A connected device, such as a phone or computer | Listening depends on internet access. |
A service may offer related programming through both methods, but an app carrying that programming is not itself satellite radio: the delivery path is different. SiriusXM discusses streaming through connected devices separately from its satellite system in its 2025 annual filing.

Where satellite radio receivers are used
Satellite radio receivers are used in vehicles, homes, boats, aircraft, and portable devices. The FCC’s description establishes these general categories, but it does not establish that every receiver works with every vehicle, installation, or service. What the definition does not tell you
The definition explains the transmission method, not the practical terms of a particular service. The cited sources do not establish current subscription prices, receiver prices, coverage guarantees, or subscription requirements. Those details depend on the provider, device, and location and should be checked with the relevant service before choosing a setup.
The FCC characterized SiriusXM as the only U.S. SDARS operator in a 2024 report. That is a time-bounded statement about the U.S. market, not a claim about operators worldwide. FCC 2024 Communications Marketplace Report
