Digital light processing (DLP) is a technology that controls light using a digital micromirror device (DMD), a chip containing an array of tiny movable mirrors. In a projector, those mirrors direct light through projection optics to form an image. DLP also controls patterned light in applications such as resin 3D printing, automotive lighting, and machine vision.
How digital light processing works
A DLP system illuminates a DMD. Its microscopic mirrors tilt to direct or modulate light, while a controller and supporting chipset components coordinate the incoming data and mirror operation. In a display system, the resulting light passes through projection optics to create a visible image. Texas Instruments (TI), which develops DLP products, describes the DMD, controller, and driver as key parts of its chipset architecture in its DLP display technology guide.
TI summarizes the central component this way: “At the heart of DLP technology is the digital micromirror device, a chip covered with millions of microscopic mirrors that tilt to reflect light and create precise images.” The statement appears in TI’s display and projection overview.
DLP and DMD are not the same term
DLP is the name of the light-control technology; DMD is the digital micromirror device at its core. The DMD is the mirror array, while a DLP system includes the components that illuminate it, control its mirrors, and direct the modulated light for a particular task.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Where DLP is used
Projection and displays
Projection is a prominent DLP application. TI lists systems for home cinema, business and education, portable projectors, and large venues. These are different product categories built around DLP light modulation, not a statement that all DLP systems have the same capabilities or resolution. See TI’s DLP product overview.
Automotive light control
Outside conventional projection, TI lists DLP applications in adaptive headlights, head-up displays, and dynamic interior lighting. Here, controlling light patterns serves an automotive lighting or display function rather than projecting a movie onto a screen.

Industrial and scientific systems
TI also identifies machine vision, lithography, and spectroscopy as industrial or scientific uses for digital micromirror devices. In these systems, a controllable light pattern can be used as part of a measurement, exposure, or inspection process. TI’s industrial DMD overview describes these application areas.
Resin 3D printing
In a DLP resin printer, the DMD projects a patterned exposure onto photopolymer resin, selectively hardening a cross-section of the object. TI’s 3D-printing overview describes an approach in which a complete layer can be exposed with one pattern, with build speed independent of layer complexity. That describes the process TI covers; it is not a guarantee about every printer or print job. A resin printer shares the patterned-light mechanism with projection, but its task is to cure material layer by layer, not display video.

What the term does not tell you
- It does not specify a projector’s resolution. TI says its 4K UHD DLP technology provides 8.3 million distinct pixels to meet the Consumer Technology Association’s definition of true 4K UHD. That figure describes the specified TI technology, not every DLP device. See TI’s DLP projection page.
- It does not mean “video projector.” DLP is also used in automotive, industrial, scientific, and manufacturing applications.
- It does not establish a performance ranking. The DLP sources cited here explain its micromirror-based architecture and applications; they do not provide neutral head-to-head evidence that DLP is generally better or worse than LCD or another display technology.
A brief history of DLP Cinema
TI identifies May 16, 1999, as the date the film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace became the first film publicly shown on a digital projector using DLP Cinema technology. This is TI’s historical account, as published on its DLP projection page.
