Digital audio extraction (DAE), usually called CD ripping, is the process of reading audio data directly from a physical audio CD and saving it as digital audio files. It is not a recording of music playing through speakers or a sound card: ripping software requests the disc’s digital audio data from an optical drive and writes it to files.
How digital audio extraction works
A ripping application reads the CD’s track layout, then asks a compatible CD-reading optical drive for the audio data. You can typically select tracks, choose an output format and file names, and set the extraction speed. Adobe Audition’s instructions say to use a speed supported by the selected drive and to slow extraction if errors occur: Adobe Audition: Extracting audio from CDs.
The process requires both ripping software and an optical drive that can read audio CDs. If your computer has no built-in drive, a compatible external USB CD/DVD drive can provide one; check that it supports audio CD reading and works with your computer. What makes a rip secure?
Extraction software can use different strategies to balance speed and error recovery. Secure modes may reread problematic sectors, compare repeated reads, and report errors. Fast or burst modes prioritize speed and may do less software-level rereading or recovery. That does not mean every fast rip is bad, or that a secure-mode rip is guaranteed perfect. Scratches, drive behavior, and other reading problems can affect results; secure handling offers more opportunities to detect or recover from errors, not certainty.
Drive support and settings matter, too. When comparing workflows, consider whether the software supports your drive, how it handles drive read offsets and track boundaries, whether it trims silence, what output formats and naming controls it offers, and whether it produces a useful extraction log.

What AccurateRip verification tells you
AccurateRip compares extracted-track checksums with entries in an online database. If a track matches, that is useful evidence that its extracted data agrees with other submissions for the same disc and track. It is corroboration, not a guarantee that every possible error has been found. AccurateRip explains its verification approach and the limits of drive-based error detection on its homepage.
A track that cannot be verified is not automatically a bad rip. The disc may not be represented in the database, or differences in track boundaries, silence handling, or drive read offset may prevent a comparison. AccurateRip reported 5.3 million unique discs, over 4 million key discs, and 536 million accurate rips on its homepage in 2026; the page says its database was updated in September 2026. These are figures reported about AccurateRip’s own database, not independent counts of all CDs or a general error rate: AccurateRip.

A matching AccurateRip result supports confidence that a track agrees with the database entry. If a match is unavailable, consider the extraction log, any reported read errors, whether the disc is scratched, and whether settings such as silence trimming or track boundaries could explain the result. A checksum match between repeated reads can also show that those reads agreed, but it does not by itself establish that the result matches the original disc. Verification is most informative when the drive, software settings, and comparison data are suitable for the disc.
