Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote discussed potential investments in Egypt on October 3, 2026. The reported areas were energy, fertilizers, chemicals and cement. Egypt’s presidency said no agreement was signed, and no investment value or project timetable was announced. These are discussions, not a confirmed Egyptian project. Ahram Online’s October 3 factbox reported the meeting in New Alamein during the Alamein Africa business forum.
What is Dangote Group?
Dangote Group is a Nigerian industrial conglomerate founded in 1981. Its principal holding company, Dangote Industries Limited, is headquartered in Lagos. Founder Aliko Dangote is identified as the group’s president and chief executive. The company’s activities span cement, petroleum refining, petrochemicals, fertilizers, sugar, salt, seasonings, agriculture, packaging and logistics, according to Ahram Online.
The group’s stated founding date is distinct from the earlier start of Dangote’s trading activity: he entered rice, sugar and cement trading in 1978. Dangote Cement, Dangote Sugar Refinery and NASCON Allied Industries are among its listed businesses; NASCON makes salt and seasonings. Dangote is an Al-Azhar University graduate, and studied in Cairo.

What did Dangote and Egypt discuss?
The October 3, 2026 meeting in New Alamein covered possible investment in four areas: energy, fertilizers, chemicals and cement. The meeting took place during the Alamein Africa business forum, which Ahram Online described as a biennial African business platform.
#1 Best Overall
- Confirmed: the two sides held discussions about potential investment in the named sectors.
- Not confirmed: a signed agreement, a specific Egyptian project, investment amount or timetable. The presidency said no agreement was signed, and no value or schedule was reported.
Accordingly, describing Dangote as “eyeing Egypt” reflects interest and talks, not a commitment to build or invest in a particular facility.
How large are Dangote’s industrial operations?
The figures below are capacities, plans or estimates reported by Ahram Online, which attributes them to company websites, announcements and other named sources. Capacity is not the same as actual output, and proposed expansion is not completed capacity.
Rank #2
| Business or project | Reported figure | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Dangote Cement | 55 million tonnes of annual installed capacity across 10 countries | Company website figure reported by Ahram Online; installed capacity, not annual production. |
| Lekki refinery, Nigeria | 700,000 barrels per day | Stated capacity; the refinery began processing crude in 2024. Expansion to 1.4 million barrels per day is planned. |
| Polypropylene at the refinery complex | 830,000 tonnes per year | Advertised capacity reported by Ahram Online. |
| Nigerian fertilizer complex | 3 million tonnes of urea per year in its first phase; stated construction cost of $2.5 billion | Reported first-phase capacity and construction cost, not a measure of current group revenue or investment in Egypt. |
| Planned Lamu refinery, Kenya | $16 billion planned cost; target capacity of 700,000 barrels per day; completion targeted for 2030 | Project plans reported by Ahram Online; land-rights litigation and environmental objections were also noted. |
| Dangote Group ambition | $100 billion annual revenue by 2030 | Future target, supported by Afreximbank as reported by Ahram Online; not current turnover. |
Which other investments has the group announced?
Nigeria: refining and fertilizer expansion
The Lekki refinery near Lagos produces petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and liquefied petroleum gas, according to the factbox. In September 2026, Dangote launched a $1.6 billion share offering in the refinery to help finance an expansion. Ahram Online reported that the offering was scheduled to close on October 13, 2026; that date is a schedule, not confirmation here of its eventual outcome.
The group has also outlined plans to expand fertilizer capacity to 12 million tonnes annually and reportedly hoped to list its fertilizer business in 2027. Both are forward-looking plans, not completed milestones.
Kenya: proposed Lamu refinery
Dangote broke ground on the planned Lamu refinery on September 30, 2026. Its announced target is 700,000 barrels per day, with completion targeted for 2030. The project’s cost, capacity and timetable are targets; Ahram Online also reported land-rights litigation and environmental objections.
Ethiopia and Djibouti
In May 2026, the group said declared and signed investments in Ethiopia exceeded $4 billion. Separately, it announced a petroleum pipeline and storage venture involving Ethiopia and Djibouti in September 2026, with a reported value of $660 million. These are distinct announcements and should not be treated as Egyptian commitments.

What the figures say—and do not say
Dangote Group’s reach is clearest in its operating businesses and announced projects, but several headline numbers describe different things: installed capacity, expansion goals, estimated construction costs, declared investments or revenue ambitions. They cannot be combined into a single measure of current output, completed investment or annual sales. For example, the $28.5 billion figure Ahram Online attributed to Forbes is an estimate of Aliko Dangote’s personal fortune, based on prices and exchange rates on March 1, 2026—not group revenue or assets.
For Egypt, the key distinction is simpler: the October 3 meeting established that investment discussions took place, while the presidency’s reported position and the lack of announced project details leave the outcome at the discussion stage.
