Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) is a historical industry term for Ethernet enhancements intended to carry different kinds of data-center traffic over one shared network infrastructure. The standards-based feature family associated with that goal is Data Center Bridging (DCB): a set of functions for handling traffic classes, coordinating congestion, and sharing configuration—not a separate type of Ethernet cable or physical medium.
CEE and DCB: what is the difference?
CEE names an industry-era effort and terminology; DCB is the standards-based umbrella for the related Ethernet bridging features. CEE is not one single IEEE standard, and the names should not be treated as perfectly interchangeable. In practice, you may encounter “CEE” in vendor documentation or older product settings. Use “DCB” when referring to the standardized feature family, then check the device documentation for the particular protocol variant and implementation it supports.
What DCB features do
DCB comprises distinct mechanisms. They address different parts of traffic handling, so a network using one feature is not necessarily using all of them.

Priority-based Flow Control (PFC)
IEEE 802.1Qbb PFC applies link-level pause behavior independently to traffic priorities on a full-duplex link. It is similar to Ethernet PAUSE, but can pause selected priorities rather than stopping all traffic classes on the link. VLAN-tag priority values identify those priorities. This lets a network manage congestion for selected traffic without necessarily pausing unrelated classes. IEEE 802.1 DCB overview
Enhanced Transmission Selection (ETS)
IEEE 802.1Qaz ETS allocates bandwidth among traffic classes. It can allow other classes to use bandwidth a class is not using, while also supporting strict-priority traffic where appropriate. ETS is about scheduling and bandwidth sharing; it is not the same mechanism as PFC. IEEE 802.1 DCB overview

Congestion Notification (CN)
IEEE 802.1Qau defines congestion management for protocols that do not provide their own congestion control. IEEE also describes an expected timely benefit for protocols such as TCP. CN and PFC have different scopes and operations: CN manages congestion, while PFC pauses traffic priorities on a link. IEEE 802.1 DCB overview
Data Center Bridging eXchange (DCBX)
DCBX lets neighboring devices discover capabilities and exchange configuration so DCB features can be applied consistently. It uses LLDP-related functionality. Support for DCBX does not by itself mean two devices use the same DCBX variant or behave identically; implementation and configuration matter. IEEE 802.1 DCB overview

Does CEE make Ethernet lossless?
Not as a blanket guarantee. PFC’s goal is to prevent congestion-related packet loss in DCB networks; Intel describes it as capable of limiting or eliminating dropped packets during stress. Those statements describe a mechanism’s goal or capability, not proof that every packet will be delivered without loss across every end-to-end deployment. - Whether both endpoints and every intermediate switch support the specific DCB features required.
- Which priorities use PFC, and what buffer and headroom behavior the vendor documents.
- How ETS traffic classes, bandwidth allocations, and any strict-priority classes are configured.
- Which DCBX variant is supported and which device or software controls configuration.
- Whether the exact models, firmware, and drivers interoperate across the intended path.
For example, Intel’s version 29.3 guide says its OS DCBX stack defaults to CEE and transitions automatically to IEEE when it receives IEEE TLVs. That is Intel-specific guidance for the documented version, not a universal behavior for CEE-capable equipment. Intel Ethernet Adapters and Devices User Guide, version 29.3
IEEE’s standards descriptions explain what the mechanisms do; they do not establish that a particular switch model supports them. Confirm feature support in the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact product and software version.
