It is broader than the automated build-and-test step commonly called continuous integration, and it does not require every change to be deployed automatically to production.
What continuous testing means
ISTQB defines continuous testing as “an approach that involves a process of testing early, testing often, test everywhere, and automate to obtain feedback on the business risks associated with a software release candidate as rapidly as possible.” This definition appears in the ISTQB CTAL-ATT syllabus, version 1.1, dated 9 December 2019; it is a useful professional definition, not a universal legal or regulatory standard.
In practice, a change triggers the automated checks that are relevant to that modification and its risks. The goal is not to automate every conceivable test or run the whole suite after every keystroke. It is to surface useful evidence quickly enough for developers and release decision-makers to act on it.
How it relates to CI, continuous delivery, and deployment
These terms describe connected but different parts of a delivery process. Microsoft describes continuous integration (CI) as automatically building and testing code when a team member commits changes to version control. The resulting shared-branch build checks that integrated code. CI is therefore a common place for continuous tests to run, while continuous testing describes the broader approach of obtaining rapid, risk-related feedback.

| Practice | What it describes | What it does not require by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous testing | Early, frequent, automated checks selected to provide feedback about release-candidate risk. | Automatic production deployment or one fixed test suite for every change. |
| Continuous integration | Automatically building and testing changes committed to a shared version-control repository. | Promotion of every change to production. |
| Continuous delivery | Extending CI by moving changes into test, pre-production, or production-like environments, where teams can run checks with more realistic inputs. | Automatic release of every change to production. |
| Continuous deployment | Automatically deploying every change to production. | A particular testing method; testing and deployment are related but distinct practices. |
ISTQB distinguishes continuous delivery from continuous deployment in these terms. Testing continuously does not mean a team has chosen continuous deployment: a team may keep a human approval or release decision after automated checks.
What a continuous-testing pipeline can check
Test scope is a portfolio chosen for the product, change, and release risks—not a checklist that every team must execute at every pipeline stage. NIST’s DevSecOps reference model illustrates an automated pipeline with build, CI, delivery, deployment, and operation stages, but it is a reference model rather than a mandated architecture.
Build, unit, and integration checks
At the change or commit stage, a pipeline can verify that the code builds and run fast tests such as unit and integration checks. These checks help catch defects close to the change. Microsoft’s CI guidance specifically describes commits triggering an automated build and test of shared code.

Functional and acceptance checks
Functional testing can range from component behavior to realistic user flows. A staging or production-like environment can support acceptance checks with real user inputs and integrated services, where that level of realism is appropriate.
Non-functional checks
Performance, load, stress, and portability checks assess qualities beyond whether a feature produces the expected result. ISTQB gives these as examples of checks that may run in a production-like stage. They may need different environments and execution schedules from fast commit checks.
Security and configuration checks
NIST’s model includes static application security testing (SAST) and software composition analysis (SCA), as well as scanners for secrets, infrastructure as code (IaC), and container images. Integrating these checks into the pipeline broadens its risk coverage beyond functional behavior.

Human testing remains useful
Pipeline automation does not establish that exploratory testing or human judgment is unnecessary. Automated checks provide repeatable evidence for the conditions they cover; people may still need to investigate ambiguous behavior, usability, and risks that are difficult to encode as assertions.
How to introduce continuous testing
- Start with a change-triggered feedback loop. Identify the risks and requirements a change touches, then run the relevant automated checks as early as practical. Keep the failure signal actionable: a developer should be able to tell what failed and where to investigate.
- Expand by stage and test purpose. Add broader integration and realistic functional checks where the environment supports them. Use production-like stages for selected end-to-end or non-functional tests that need realistic inputs or configuration.
- Include security and configuration evidence. Consider SAST, SCA, secrets, IaC, and container-image scanning alongside functional tests, choosing checks that fit the product and its risk profile.
- Preserve results across the pipeline. Retain test results, logs, alerts, and other evidence so later stages and team members can understand what ran, what passed, and what needs attention. NIST describes evidence and feedback moving through pipeline stages.
- Review the portfolio as the system changes. Remove redundant or obsolete checks, investigate unreliable tests, and update coverage when architecture, dependencies, or release risks change.
Trade-offs and design choices
Continuous testing aims for rapid risk feedback, but no single suite size, runtime, coverage percentage, or return-on-investment target is established by the cited guidance. Teams need to balance feedback time against meaningful coverage, test reliability, and the effort of maintaining suitable environments.
Recommended Free Tools
- Trigger selection: Run checks related to the change early; broader suites may run at later stages or on a different cadence when their cost or setup makes them unsuitable for every commit.
- Environment realism: Isolated environments can provide fast, repeatable checks, while production-like environments can expose integration and configuration issues. The latter generally requires more setup and care.
- Failure signal quality: A fast red status is less useful if failures are flaky or hard to diagnose. Preserve logs and context so a result informs the next decision rather than merely blocking it.
- Coverage versus maintenance: More automation is not automatically better; checks and environments cost time to create and maintain. Prioritize risks the team can explain and act on.
These are engineering choices, not guarantees that a particular pipeline makes every release safe or faster.

If a test workflow needs a website screenshot—for example, as visual evidence from a browser check—a browser automation framework can capture it as part of the test. Use a representative test URL and account for asynchronous rendering, consent overlays, and other page state that affects what the capture shows.
DIY with browser automation
With Playwright for Node.js, install the package using npm install playwright and install its browser with npx playwright install chromium. Save this as capture.mjs, then run node capture.mjs:

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 60000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Replace the example URL with a page you are authorized to test. For sites with long-lived network requests, networkidle may never arrive; use an application-specific readiness selector or a bounded wait instead. Browser installation, dependencies, and page behavior can also differ across CI environments.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. This one-call cURL example saves a WebP capture; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does continuous testing mean running all tests on every commit?
No. The approach calls for relevant, risk-aware checks to run early and often, with broader checks placed where their environment and execution cost make sense.
Can a team use continuous testing without continuous deployment?
Yes. Automated testing can provide release feedback while a team retains a manual approval or release step; continuous deployment specifically means automatically deploying every change to production.
