Typical examples include click-to-dial, desktop call controls, caller identification, screen pops and call reporting. CTI is an integration capability—not a particular phone or piece of hardware.
What computer telephony integration means
CTI links communications—such as phone calls—with software that helps people manage calls or serve customers. In a contact center, that software might be an agent desktop connected to customer databases, transaction systems or customer relationship management (CRM) software. Cisco describes this kind of contact-center integration in its CTI OS Developer Guide for Cisco Unified ICM, Release 12.6(1).
The term does not name one universal product or architecture. A CTI setup may involve a phone system, such as a PBX or switch, and one or more computer applications; its capabilities depend on the platforms and interfaces involved. Genesys likewise defines CTI in relation to PBX equipment and computer applications in its glossary.
How CTI works
A telephony platform and an application exchange call information or controls. For example, when a call arrives, the phone system can report the event and caller-number information to the application. The application may then search for a related customer record and display it to an agent. Depending on the implementation, software may also initiate calls or pass along call and agent-state events.

Cisco’s contact-center example uses the incoming number—also described as ANI or calling-line ID—to look up an account and present it to an agent. That lookup is useful context, not proof of who is calling: a phone number can be shared, reassigned or otherwise fail to identify the person on the line. A record match should not substitute for identity verification.
Common CTI capabilities
CTI features differ by vendor and system. Common examples include:
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Click-to-dial or power dialing: start a call from a contact record or another integrated application.
- Call controls: manage supported phone actions from a desktop, such as answering an incoming call, placing a call on hold or muting it. Oracle lists these examples in its Utilities Customer Care and Billing 26.4 documentation.
- Caller identification and screen pops: use call information to find and display a potentially relevant record when a call arrives.
- Call history and reporting: capture call information in an application or make it available for reports.
- Contact-center events and control: some systems exchange call and agent states, provide statistics about agents, calls and queues, or support third-party call control. These are documented capabilities of Cisco’s Unified CCX CTI protocol, not a universal feature list for all CTI products.
- Call transcripts: a transcript may be available when the CTI vendor supports it; it is not inherent in every CTI setup, as Oracle’s documentation notes.
What CTI does not guarantee
- One standard feature set: a feature present in one vendor’s CTI offering or protocol may not be available in another.
- Automatic identity confirmation: caller-number information can help find a record but cannot, on its own, establish the caller’s identity.
- A required physical product: CTI describes an integration between communications and software, not a single device a user must buy.
What to check when evaluating a CTI setup
If you are assessing a system for a business, start with the work it needs to support rather than the CTI label alone. Confirm that the phone platform and its call-control interface work with the applications you use, then verify that the specific functions you need—such as click-to-dial, screen pops, call-state events or reporting—are supported. Check vendor-specific limits as well, especially for optional capabilities such as transcripts.
There is no product comparison implied by the definition: CTI describes the connection between systems, while implementation details determine what that connection can do. Cisco’s Release 12.6(1) guide is dated May 12, 2021, and product-specific documentation should be read in the context of the platform and version it covers.
