Cloud streaming runs an application or game on remote computers and sends its audio and video to your device. In interactive services, your inputs travel back to the remote system, which processes them and sends an updated picture and sound. A streaming proxy can help authenticate and route the connection that starts a session; depending on the design, it may not carry the media itself.

What is cloud streaming?

Cloud streaming moves the work of running or rendering an application away from the user’s device. A remote computer performs that work, encodes the output as audio and video, and sends it over a network to a client such as a phone, computer, headset, or console. The client decodes and displays the stream.

For interactive cloud streaming, the client also sends user input back to the remote application. This is what distinguishes cloud gaming from ordinary video-on-demand: a game must respond to controls, while a video-on-demand stream primarily delivers media that has already been produced. Microsoft describes Xbox Game Streaming as running a game on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter; with Xbox Remote Play, the game runs on the user’s own Xbox console. Microsoft Learn’s game-streaming overview explains this distinction.

How does cloud gaming work?

A simplified interactive session follows a loop: input travels to the remote system, the game processes it and renders a new frame, the system encodes the result, and the client decodes and displays it. The next input starts the cycle again.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Input: A button press, touch, or other control is sent from the client over the network.
  2. Remote processing and rendering: The game or application handles the input and produces updated visual output.
  3. Encoding and delivery: The remote system encodes audio and video and sends the media to the client.
  4. Decoding and display: The client decodes the incoming stream and presents it to the user.

Each stage contributes to perceived responsiveness. Network transit in both directions, application processing, rendering, encoding, decoding, and display all add to the time between an input and its visible result. Meta’s engineering account describes this end-to-end chain and discusses engineering choices in its own cloud gaming system, including nearby edge locations, GPU encoding, and client hardware decoding. Those examples are not a universal latency target or a promise of a particular experience. Meta Engineering’s cloud gaming infrastructure article provides further detail.

How does a streaming proxy work?

“Streaming proxy” can describe different architectures. In NVIDIA’s CloudXR reference design, a proxy is a public-facing connection point for session setup. It is not necessarily an intermediary for the high-volume audio and video stream.

  1. The client connects to the proxy: The client opens a secure WebSocket connection to the proxy to begin signaling.
  2. The proxy authenticates and routes: The proxy can check signaling headers, select an available GPU-backed server instance, and forward the WebSocket signaling connection.
  3. The server accepts the session: The selected server responds to the connection setup.
  4. The media path is negotiated: ICE helps establish the media connection. In this reference design, once that path is established, media can flow directly between client and server rather than through the proxy.

This separation matters: the proxy may be essential for authentication, discovery, and backend selection without carrying the media traffic. NVIDIA presents this as a CloudXR deployment design, not a rule that applies to every cloud-streaming system. NVIDIA’s CloudXR deployment documentation describes the reference architecture.

Where the proxy can fit

NVIDIA’s guidance gives examples of possible proxy implementations: a dedicated service, an API gateway, or a load balancer that supports WebSockets. It lists HAProxy, nginx, Envoy, and custom WebSocket applications as options. These are examples in that design guidance, not endorsements or proof that one choice suits every deployment.

NAT, reachability, and security

A client must be able to reach the server’s media endpoint, not just its signaling proxy. If a server is behind cloud NAT or lacks a media address reachable by the client, NVIDIA’s reference uses ICE and calls for configuring STUN to help discover a public-facing media candidate. STUN applies in the described setup when ICE is enabled; it does not, by itself, guarantee a working media path.

Networks that block negotiated UDP media traffic may need allowlisting, forwarding, or a deployment-specific relay strategy. A signaling proxy alone cannot guarantee media connectivity. The right approach depends on the deployment’s network policies and the paths available between client and server.

For the public-facing signaling connection, the CloudXR reference recommends a trusted, CA-signed HTTPS certificate for secure WebSockets. It describes checking credentials in WebSocket upgrade headers and keeping server instances behind a firewall with access controlled as sessions are established. Whether and how to authenticate and encrypt traffic between proxy and server is a deployment decision in that reference. These are implementation recommendations, not a complete security standard.

What affects responsiveness and stream quality?

Responsiveness depends on the whole path: input transit, remote processing and rendering, encoding, return transit, client decoding, and display. A well-placed proxy cannot compensate for every delay elsewhere in the system. Likewise, a fast network on one segment does not establish the performance of the entire session.

When evaluating an architecture, consider where GPU resources sit relative to users, which network paths and traffic types must be allowed, whether the proxy carries media or signaling only, how authentication and server selection work, and how ICE, STUN, or relays handle reachability. Also identify who manages certificates and protects proxy-to-server communications. There is no single latency threshold or bandwidth figure established here that can be applied to every service and network.

How cloud streaming fits into standards

ITU-T Recommendation F.743.17, approved on 2022-03-16 and listed as in force in its record, covers cloud-gaming requirements spanning performance, management, security, networking, terminals, and other system aspects. Its scenarios include cloud game distribution, running, cross-platform gaming, and live streaming. ITU-T F.743.17’s record gives the recommendation’s status and scope.

ITU-T J.1312 (03/2025) frames cloud-gaming service infrastructure in terms of hardware resources, resource management, and game instances. It provides broader infrastructure context, while NVIDIA’s CloudXR documentation describes a specific proxy and connection flow. ITU-T J.1312’s summary outlines that infrastructure framing.

Cloud streaming versus a 24/7 YouTube video stream

Cloud gaming and remote application streaming are interactive: a user’s controls affect the remotely running application. A pre-recorded video running as a YouTube livestream is a different use case. It sends uploaded video as a live broadcast; it does not remotely run an interactive game or send gameplay controls to an application. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, not a camera-based cloud gaming or interactive-streaming system. Learn more at StreamNeo.

Or let it run in the cloud

To keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube livestream, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so no computer or home internet connection has to stay on. Each slot streams the video as uploaded, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, once per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
