Chip and PIN is a common name for paying with an EMV chip card, usually by inserting it into a compatible payment terminal. The chip and terminal exchange payment data, and the chip creates a transaction-specific cryptographic code that helps authenticate the card. A PIN is one way to verify the cardholder, but it is not required for every chip transaction.
What does “Chip and PIN” mean?
The phrase usually refers to EMV chip payment technology. EMV is the name associated with specifications administered by EMVCo; “Chip and PIN” describes a familiar way of using the technology, not a single required combination of hardware and verification. EMVCo explains the terminology in its What is EMV Chip? overview.
The chip and PIN answer different questions: the chip helps authenticate the payment card and transaction, while the PIN is a method for checking that the person using the card is authorised. Whether a PIN is requested depends on the payment system, market, transaction, and cardholder-verification rules.

- Insert the card. The cardholder places the contact chip card into a compatible merchant terminal. Contact chip transactions require physical contact between the card’s chip and the reader.
- Exchange payment information. The card and terminal communicate to provide information needed to process the transaction.
- Generate a transaction-specific code. The chip uses cryptography to create a cryptogram for that transaction. EMVCo says the issuer and point-of-sale terminal use this one-time code to authenticate the card; it cannot simply be reused for another payment. See EMV Contact Chip.
- Verify the cardholder if required. The transaction may ask for a PIN or use another cardholder verification method. The payment is then processed under the applicable issuer and payment-system rules.
The cryptogram helps reduce counterfeit-card risk, but it does not make fraud impossible. EMV chip security is one part of a broader payment system that also involves the card issuer, terminal, and other controls.

Does every Chip and PIN transaction require a PIN?
No. PIN is one cardholder verification method, not an inherent requirement of every EMV chip payment. EMV specifications include online and offline PIN as well as signature, no cardholder verification, and device-based biometrics; which method is used varies by market and transaction. In an EMVCo interview, Brian Byrne answers “No” to whether all EMV chip transactions require a PIN and describes these alternatives. EMV Specifications: Enabling Safe and Convenient Payments.
How is Chip and PIN different from contactless?
Contact and contactless are ways for a payment device to communicate with the terminal. PIN and other verification methods concern how the cardholder may be verified. They are related parts of a payment, but they are not competing technologies.

| Payment method | How it communicates with the terminal | Cardholder verification |
|---|---|---|
| Contact chip card | The card is inserted so its chip physically contacts the compatible reader. | May use PIN or another method, depending on the transaction and market. |
| Contactless card | The card is tapped near a compatible reader. | May require verification under applicable rules; a PIN is not universal. |
| Mobile wallet | An NFC-enabled phone or other device is brought close to a compatible reader. | May use device biometrics or another supported method, depending on the wallet and transaction. |
EMV supports both contact and contactless transactions, including payments from NFC-enabled mobile devices. Mobile wallets may also use payment tokenisation. EMVCo outlines the terminology and payment modes in What is EMV Chip?.

What does the chip protect against—and what does it not cover?
The chip’s transaction-specific cryptogram helps authenticate the card and transaction, making copied card data less useful for creating counterfeit chip transactions. EMVCo describes chip security as part of a wider set of protections, including data authentication and risk management at the card and terminal; cardholder verification can provide an additional feature. It is risk reduction, not a guarantee against every kind of payment fraud. See How is EMV Chip Addressing Cybersecurity in Payments?.

A chip card used at a physical terminal is not the same as an online card-not-present payment. EMVCo identifies separate technologies for online and digital payment environments, including EMV 3-D Secure, Secure Remote Commerce, and payment tokenisation. The basic term “Chip and PIN” does not, by itself, describe how an online purchase is secured.
