Cadence Tensilica HiFi iQ is configurable digital signal processor (DSP) intellectual property for chip designers to integrate into system-on-chip (SoC) products—not a standalone audio device. Announced on January 21, 2026, it is the sixth generation of Cadence’s HiFi DSP family and is aimed at combining advanced audio processing with on-device AI. Cadence’s published performance comparisons are against its earlier HiFi 5s core; they are vendor claims, not independently verified benchmarks.
What HiFi iQ is—and who it is for
HiFi iQ is an Xtensa-based processor design that SoC developers can configure for their products. In an SoC, a DSP handles signal-processing workloads such as audio filtering, codec operations and speech processing. HiFi iQ adds AI-oriented compute to that role, targeting edge devices where latency, power consumption and available silicon area matter.
That makes the announcement most relevant to chip architects, embedded-system developers and companies evaluating processor IP. Consumers cannot buy HiFi iQ as a separate chip or audio accessory. Cadence describes a configurable family whose cores and software are integrated into customer SoCs.
What workloads Cadence targets
Cadence positions HiFi iQ for products that need to process sound and run AI locally, rather than sending every task to a cloud service. Its announced use cases span voice interfaces, audio enhancement and immersive playback.

These are target workloads described by Cadence, not proof that every HiFi iQ-based product will support every feature. A particular implementation depends on the SoC design, software configuration and product requirements.
What Cadence claims compared with HiFi 5s
In its January 21, 2026 announcement, Cadence says HiFi iQ delivers the following improvements over HiFi 5s. The announcement does not provide a complete workload-by-workload benchmark table or test methodology, so these figures should be read as the company’s reported comparisons.

| Cadence-reported comparison | Qualification |
|---|---|
| 2× compute performance | Compared with HiFi 5s, according to Cadence’s January 2026 announcement. |
| 8× AI performance | Compared with HiFi 5s, according to Cadence’s January 2026 announcement. |
| More than 25% energy savings for most workloads | Compared with HiFi 5s; the announcement does not detail every workload or the test methodology. |
| More than 40% performance uplift on numerous audio codecs | Compared with HiFi 5s; the announcement does not provide full benchmark details for the claim. |
The comparisons suggest Cadence is aiming to improve both AI throughput and conventional audio processing rather than treating the DSP as an AI-only accelerator. They do not establish how a customer’s finished device will perform: results depend on the selected workload, implementation and system design.

For audio, Cadence names Dolby MS12, Eclipsa Audio, Opus HD and Audio Vivid among the immersive codecs it says the DSP supports. It also says HiFi iQ can run small and large language models directly, or work alongside a Cadence Neo NPU or a customer-designed NPU for additional performance. The announcement provides no model-specific benchmark or power test for those language-model claims, and framework compatibility alone does not establish that a given model or software package is available for every customer configuration.
Cadence’s broader HiFi ecosystem includes optimized DSP and neural-network libraries, codecs and an audio framework. Its family page names Dolby, DTS and Fraunhofer Labs as ecosystem examples. Availability, licensing and suitability of individual components should be confirmed for the intended SoC and customer arrangement.

How HiFi iQ fits into the HiFi DSP family
Cadence’s family brief positions different HiFi cores for different balances of power, audio processing and AI. These are the company’s descriptions of the family, not independent rankings.
| Core | Cadence’s stated positioning |
|---|---|
| HiFi 1s | Ultra-low-energy, always-on voice and sensor use. |
| HiFi 3z | Efficient codecs and voice user interfaces. |
| HiFi 4 | Multi-microphone processing and wake-word detection. |
| HiFi 5s | AI alongside high-quality audio and speech processing. |
| HiFi iQ | A newer high-performance option for voice AI and immersive audio. |
For a design decision, the useful comparison is not just a peak-performance figure. Teams should match the core to their always-on power budget, number of audio streams and channels, sampling rate, codec requirements, inference workload, software stack and any need for a separate NPU. Configuration and integration choices determine how well the IP fits a product.

Availability and automotive safety status
Cadence’s January 21, 2026 announcement forecast lead-customer availability in Q1 2026 and general availability in the following quarter. The materials cited here do not confirm whether either milestone occurred, so those dates should not be treated as verified current availability. Cadence also described ISO 26262 functional-safety certification as a target; the announcement does not establish that certification was achieved.
Organizations evaluating HiFi iQ should confirm current licensing or evaluation access directly with Cadence and ask for the specific implementation, software and safety documentation relevant to their intended product.
Family-scale ecosystem figures are not HiFi iQ adoption figures
Cadence’s HiFi family webpage, accessed October 4, 2026, says the family has more than 150 licensees and more than 300 software algorithms from over 200 partners. A separate Cadence family product brief, also accessed October 4, 2026, gives different figures: over 160 licensees, over 200 partners and hundreds of software packages. These are family-level marketing figures, not HiFi iQ-specific customer or deployment counts, and the sources do not explain the difference in licensee totals.
