A model can show the activities involved, who performs them, the order and handoffs between them, and the decisions that send work down different paths. BPMN is one formal notation for making these models; it is not another name for the broader practice.
What business process modeling represents
A business process is connected work carried out by people, systems, or organizations to achieve a business outcome. A process model selects and depicts aspects of that work for a particular purpose. It may represent the intended design of a process or describe how the work is performed.
IBM describes a business process definition in terms of activities, the roles that conduct them, conditional branching, and workflow sequence. In practice, a model can make questions such as these easier to discuss:
- What work needs to happen, and in what order?
- Who is responsible for each activity, and where are the handoffs?
- Which decisions change the next step?
- How do separate participants or organizations interact?
A model is a representation, not the work itself. What it includes depends on what its audience needs to understand or decide.

What business process modeling is used for
A process model gives stakeholders a shared view of how work proceeds and where responsibilities or decision points sit. Teams can use it to explain a process, examine its design, or communicate a design to people involved in implementation. Modeling alone does not improve a process or automate it: those outcomes require additional analysis, decisions, and work.
The Object Management Group (OMG), which publishes BPMN, describes the notation as serving business analysts who draft processes, technical developers who implement technology, and business people who manage and monitor processes. Its aim is to help those audiences communicate about the same process while retaining enough precision for technical use.

What BPMN means—and how it differs from modeling
BPMN stands for Business Process Model and Notation. It is a standardized graphical notation for specifying business processes in a Business Process Diagram. Business process modeling is the wider activity of creating process representations; BPMN is one defined way to express them.
OMG describes BPMN as flowchart-like and independent of a particular implementation environment. Its specification is intended to make diagrams understandable to business users while giving technical users defined process semantics. The standard covers process, collaboration, and choreography diagrams, addressing internal flows as well as interactions among participants.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
As OMG puts it, “The BPMN specification provides a graphical notation for specifying business processes in a Business Process Diagram.” A BPMN diagram can support communication, analysis, or work toward implementation, but using BPMN does not by itself make a diagram executable or a complete technical implementation.
BPMN’s standard and version context
BPMN is a formal standard, rather than just an informal diagram style. The version labels differ across the official records, so they should be read in context:

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- OMG’s specification record lists BPMN 2.0.2 as adopted in January 2014.
- OMG identifies BPMN with the international standard ISO/IEC 19510.
- ISO’s record for ISO/IEC 19510:2013 describes the adopted text as BPMN version 2.0.1, prepared by OMG and adopted through the PAS procedure.
These labels refer to separate records and should not be treated as interchangeable version numbers. The OMG specification also sets requirements for software conformance: a product can claim BPMN 2.0 conformance only if it fully meets the applicable compliance points. Software with partial support may describe itself as based on the specification, but not as conformant.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a level of detail and notation
Start with the question the model should answer. A process explanation may emphasize the main activities, roles, sequence, and decisions. A model intended to inform technical implementation may need more precise notation and detail. BPMN can bridge those purposes, but not every diagram needs to express every BPMN construct.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
When deciding whether BPMN or another approach fits, consider:
- Audience: Can business participants, analysts, and technical implementers read the model?
- Precision: Does the notation define how elements and connections should be understood, or does it rely on informal conventions?
- Purpose: Is the model meant to explain and analyze work, or to inform implementation?
- Scope: Does it show one internal workflow, interactions across participants, or a collaboration among parties?
- Tool support: Does the software support the constructs needed, and does any conformance claim match the relevant requirements?
There is no universal selection rule that makes BPMN best for every process or audience. For learning the formal notation, SAP Learning offers an introduction to reading, interpreting, and modeling in BPMN 2.0; the OMG specification is the formal reference.
