Standard Boom Mat damping sheets are described by Design Engineering, Inc. (DEI) as an asphalt-free butyl damping layer topped with a 4 mil aluminum stiffening skin, with adhesive backing and a removable release liner. The sheet’s safety data sheet (SDS) calls it black butyl mastic on a release carrier and lists a few constituents, but it does not reveal the complete formula. “Boom Mat” also names other formats—Flex, Spray-On, and Brush-On Liquid—whose material descriptions are different.

What the standard Boom Mat sheet is made of

DEI describes its standard damping sheet as a layered construction: an asphalt-free butyl noise-constraining layer, a 4 mil aluminum stiffening top skin, adhesive backing, and a removable plastic release liner. The aluminum is described as a stiffening skin; the manufacturer does not publish a complete chemical recipe for the butyl layer or adhesive on its product page. DEI’s damping-material product page

DEI’s SDS, dated May 21, 2015, describes the sheet as “Black Butyl mastic extrusion on release carrier.” Its composition section lists approximately 0.58% carbon black, less than 1.5% amorphous silica, and less than 2.2% crystalline silica. These are selected SDS disclosures, not a complete formulation, so the listed ingredients should not be treated as an exhaustive breakdown of the sheet. DEI’s Boom Mat Damping Material SDS

Why the product format matters

Boom Mat is a product family, not one universal mixture. The material description depends on whether the item is a damping sheet, a flexible sheet, or a coating. Do not apply one format’s composition or specifications to another.

Design Engineering Boom Mat Sound Deadening Material with Adhesive Backing
  • Advanced Sound and Vibration Deadening – Boom Mat is engineered to eliminate low-frequency noise and structure-borne vibrations that travel through metal surfaces. Whether you're reducing road noise, engine drone, or panel rattles, Boom Mat delivers a quieter, more comfortable experience by absorbing sound energy before it enters the cabin.
  • Premium Multi-Layer Construction – Built with a viscoelastic polymer layer bonded to a rugged aluminum wear surface, Boom Mat combines flexibility with durability. This layered design allows it to perform in a wide range of demanding environments—automotive, industrial, marine, and more—without breaking down or delaminating over time.
  • Strong Adhesion in Extreme Conditions – The high-tack adhesive backing is designed to withstand severe temperature swings, from freezing cold to extreme heat. It adheres securely to metal and most surfaces without peeling, bubbling, or sagging—perfect for floors, doors, trunks, roofs, and firewall areas.
  • Efficient Coverage, Maximum Impact – Unlike lower-grade damping materials that require 100% coverage, Boom Mat only needs to cover 25–50% of a panel to be effective—saving weight, time, and cost without sacrificing results. Its targeted performance makes it a top choice among professionals and enthusiasts alike.
  • Flexible, DIY-Friendly Installation – Boom Mat is easy to trim and shape to fit contours, curves, and tight areas. For best results, use the Boom Mat Blade Lock Knife (sold separately). Install it in doors, floors, trunks, hoods, and overhead panels for a custom soundproofing solution.
Format What the source describes What the figures apply to
Standard damping sheet Butyl damping layer, aluminum stiffening surface, adhesive, and release liner, per DEI. DEI describes SKU 050200 as 2 mm thick. A separate Crutchfield listing describes SKU 050221 as 4 mm thick and includes two 12.5-by-24-inch sheets totaling 4.2 square feet. These are different SKUs and listings, not a single thickness for all sheets. DEI; Crutchfield
Boom Mat Flex A flexible variant intended for tighter bends and irregular surfaces. O’Reilly’s listing for its specific item describes 2.5 mm butyl rubber with a clear poly surface. The 2.5 mm construction description belongs to the listed retailer SKU, not every Boom Mat sheet. O’Reilly listing
Spray-On A separate aerosol damping coating that DEI says is intended for vehicle areas that are hard to reach. DEI’s product page claims this coating tolerates temperatures up to 300°F, can be top-coated after six hours of drying, is VOC-compliant in all 50 states, and covers 20 square feet per 18 oz can. These claims apply to Spray-On, not the sheets. Check the current can label and instructions. DEI Spray-On product page
Brush-On Liquid A liquid coating with its own SDS and composition disclosure. The SDS shown as dated July 3, 2025 lists quartz at 40% and ethyl acetate at 27%. Those entries describe Brush-On Liquid, not sheet composition; an ingredient list alone is not application or safety guidance. Brush-On Liquid SDS

What the aluminum layer and butyl layer do

In DEI’s description, the butyl layer is the noise-constraining material and the aluminum skin stiffens the sheet. The release liner protects the adhesive backing before installation. These are descriptions of the product’s construction and intended function, not a published chemical formula or independent laboratory finding.

DEI positions the sheets for noise, vibration, squeaks, and rattles associated with vehicle panels and sources such as roads, stereos, and engines. Its product page says, “Interior panels vibrate and generate noise.” The page also describes installation on interior surfaces, including vertical and overhead areas. Those are manufacturer statements, not independently measured performance results. DEI product information

How to identify the right composition and specification

  1. Identify the format. Confirm whether the item is a damping sheet, Flex sheet, Spray-On aerosol, or Brush-On Liquid. The name alone does not identify a single construction.
  2. Match the SKU. Look for the exact part number on the package or listing. Thickness and dimensions differ by SKU; for example, DEI’s 050200 page specifies 2 mm, while Crutchfield’s 050221 listing specifies 4 mm.
  3. Use the matching current documents. Check the product’s current instructions and SDS for the exact format and SKU. The sheet SDS cited here is dated May 21, 2015, while the Brush-On Liquid SDS is shown as dated July 3, 2025.
  4. Follow installation and handling directions. Use the current manufacturer instructions for surface preparation, installation, and safety rather than inferring those steps from a composition description.

What is—and is not—established about performance

The available specifications describe construction, thickness, coverage, or manufacturer-stated application claims. They do not establish a general decibel reduction, damping-efficiency figure, or performance comparison across Boom Mat formats. Treat the product’s noise-control descriptions as intended uses unless a specific independent test for the exact product and conditions is available.
