Blockchain is a way for computers in a network to maintain a shared digital ledger. It groups records into blocks, links each block cryptographically to the one before it, and uses network rules to decide which updates are accepted. Those links make changes to past records detectable; as accepted blocks accumulate, rewriting earlier history generally becomes harder. A blockchain is therefore tamper-evident and tamper-resistant—not automatically impossible to alter, perfectly accurate, or suitable for every job.

What is blockchain technology?

A blockchain is a type of distributed ledger: a record shared across participating computers, often called nodes. The ledger contains transactions or other records grouped into blocks. Each block refers cryptographically to its predecessor, forming a sequence. NIST summarizes the distinction plainly: “A blockchain is the ledger itself. It contains transactional records that are grouped into blocks.” NIST’s blockchain overview describes how linked blocks, replicated copies, and consensus rules fit together.

The blockchain is the record and its linked blocks; the network is the participating computers and the communication among them. Depending on the design, participation may be open or restricted, and the rules for validating and accepting updates differ. Blockchain is not another word for cryptocurrency: it underpins many cryptocurrency systems, but distributed ledgers can also be considered for applications such as supply-chain records, registries, digital identification, and records management.

How does blockchain work?

When someone submits a transaction or another update, the network checks it against that system’s rules. Participants use a consensus mechanism to agree on which valid updates belong in the ledger and in what order. Accepted records are grouped into a block, cryptographically linked to earlier blocks, and propagated so nodes can update their copies.

  1. An authorized user creates an update. For a Bitcoin payment, the wallet uses a secret private key to sign the transaction. The signature provides mathematical evidence that the sender is authorized to spend the coins and helps prevent the issued transaction from being altered.
  2. The request is sent to the network. Bitcoin transactions are broadcast to its network. On Ethereum, a request can transfer ETH, publish smart-contract code, or ask a contract to run.
  3. Network participants check and order it. Nodes apply the network’s rules, then its consensus process determines which valid transactions are included in a block and how participants agree on the ledger’s state.
  4. An accepted block is linked to the chain. Each block’s cryptographic reference to its predecessor means changing an earlier block changes the later links. The alteration can be detected, and under the network’s rules it may invalidate subsequent blocks.
  5. Nodes update their ledger copies. The accepted update is propagated through the network, bringing participating copies into alignment according to that system’s process.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology describes blockchains as “tamper evident and tamper resistant digital ledgers implemented in a distributed fashion” in NISTIR 8202, published October 3, 2018. The distinction matters: linked records help reveal interference, but how difficult a history is to change depends on the network’s design and assumptions. Adding blocks generally makes old records harder to modify; it does not provide an identical guarantee across all blockchains.

How does a blockchain transaction work in Bitcoin and Ethereum?

Bitcoin and Ethereum illustrate different ways to operate a blockchain. Their mechanisms and confirmation expectations are examples, not rules that apply to every network.

Feature Bitcoin Ethereum
How the example reaches consensus Bitcoin.org describes mining as the proof-of-work process that confirms transactions by including them in blocks. Ethereum uses proof of stake: participants stake ETH and run validator software; validators may propose blocks, which other validators check.
What a transaction can do Transfer bitcoin, with a wallet signing the transaction using a private key. Transfer ETH, publish smart-contract code, or execute a contract. Requests pay ETH for computational resources.
Confirmation or execution detail Bitcoin.org says a transaction usually receives its first confirmation in about 10 to 60 minutes. This is an approximate Bitcoin-specific range, not a guarantee or a timing standard for other blockchains. The Ethereum introduction describes validators and smart-contract execution; it does not state a comparable confirmation-time range.

Consensus is not the same as blockchain

Proof of work and proof of stake are consensus approaches, not definitions of blockchain. A blockchain can use different mechanisms and governance arrangements. Networks also make their own choices about who may participate, what information is visible, how transactions are ordered, and how settlement or finality is treated.

Smart contracts add programmable actions

Ethereum demonstrates how a blockchain can store and run reusable programs called smart contracts. A contract’s execution changes the shared network state, and the request uses ETH to pay for computational resources. This is different from treating every blockchain as a simple payment ledger; programmability depends on the particular network.

What blockchain does—and does not—guarantee

  • It can make recorded changes detectable. Cryptographic links and distributed copies help expose alterations, while accumulating blocks can make rewriting past records more difficult.
  • It does not prove an external claim is true. A ledger can preserve what was entered without independently establishing whether an off-chain statement, measurement, or identity was accurate.
  • It does not guarantee the same privacy or openness everywhere. Some systems expose transaction records broadly; others limit access or information sharing.
  • It does not automatically remove trust. A permissioned or notary-style system may rely on known administrators or a trusted authority, while an open network distributes participation differently.
  • It does not make every transaction instantly or absolutely final. Confirmation and reversal risk depend on the network’s consensus and settlement design.

A September 2017 explanation of distributed ledger technology from the Bank for International Settlements notes that Bitcoin-style proof-of-work systems can be costly to operate, expose transactions publicly, and offer probabilistic rather than immediate absolute finality. It also discusses alternative designs with modified consensus or a notary architecture. This is a dated discussion focused on wholesale payment applications, so it illustrates trade-offs rather than serving as a current scorecard for every blockchain. How to compare blockchain and ledger designs

“Blockchain” alone does not tell you whether a system is private, fast, low-cost, or appropriate. Compare the actual design against the intended use:

  • Control and governance: Can anyone participate, or do known administrators control access and validation?
  • Privacy and visibility: Are transaction records public, restricted to participants, or shared selectively?
  • Consensus and finality: Which mechanism accepts updates, and how does the system handle confirmation, settlement, and reversal risk?
  • Cost and performance: What are the computational or transaction costs, throughput, and latency for the workload that matters?
  • Programmability and purpose: Does the use case need simple asset transfers, general computation, or smart contracts?

Distributed ledger technology is a broader term for the protocols and supporting infrastructure that let computers in different locations propose and validate transactions and synchronize records across a network, as the BIS put it in 2017. Blockchain is one way of organizing such a ledger, distinguished by records grouped into cryptographically linked blocks.
