The blend depends on how far the sample lies horizontally and vertically between those texels. It smooths transitions compared with selecting a single texel, but it is not a complete solution for every texture-sampling problem.
What bilinear texture filtering does
A texture is a grid of discrete color samples called texels. A rendered point on a surface can map to a position between texels, so a sampler must estimate a color there. Bilinear filtering uses the four texels surrounding that position and combines them with weights based on the sample’s fractional horizontal and vertical offsets. Microsoft Learn describes it as calculating “the weighted average of the 4 texels closest to the sampling point.” Microsoft Learn’s texture-filtering documentation illustrates this process.
The word “bilinear” refers to interpolation along two dimensions: first across one texture axis, then across the other. The result is equivalent to doing those two one-dimensional linear interpolations in succession.
How the four texels are blended
Let C00, C10, C01, and C11 be the colors of the four surrounding texels. Let u and v be the sample’s fractional offsets between 0 and 1 along the two axes. One common form of the calculation is:

C(u,v) = (1−u)(1−v)C00 + u(1−v)C10 + (1−u)vC01 + uvC11
Each coefficient is the texel’s weight. A texel contributes most when the sample is near it, and its weight falls as the sample moves away. At a texel’s own sample position, its weight is 1 and the other three weights are 0. Exactly halfway between all four texel centers—at their shared corner—each contributes one quarter.

A simple color example
In Microsoft’s example, the four surrounding colors are red, green, blue, and white. At the shared corner, where each texel has weight 0.25, their equal blend is gray: RGB (128, 128, 128). This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a general output color for bilinear filtering.
Why graphics use it
Texture coordinates often fall between texel samples, especially when a texture is enlarged on screen. Nearest-point sampling picks one texel; bilinear filtering blends four nearby values instead. The blend usually makes magnified textures look smoother and less blocky. Microsoft notes that linear filtering generally adds little computational overhead on modern graphics hardware, though it does not remove every image-quality issue. Microsoft Learn

How it differs from nearest, trilinear, and anisotropic filtering
| Method | What it samples or blends | Typical role and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Nearest-point sampling | Selects one nearby texel. | Preserves hard pixel boundaries but can look blocky when enlarged. |
| Bilinear filtering | Blends four nearby texels on one 2D texture level. | Smooths transitions during magnification, but may still look soft or chunky and does not fully address minification or oblique viewing. |
| Trilinear filtering | Blends bilinear results from two mipmap levels. | Adds interpolation along the mip-level dimension to smooth transitions between levels. |
| Anisotropic filtering | Samples to account for a texture footprint stretched or angled relative to the view. | Can preserve more detail on oblique surfaces than simple bilinear or mipmap filtering, at additional cost. |
Microsoft’s texture-filtering overview discusses the visual tradeoffs among linear filtering, mipmaps, and anisotropic filtering. University of Texas at Austin course material and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign course notes explain bilinear and trilinear sampling in the context of texture mapping.
What happens to texture coordinates
A sampler maps texture coordinates to positions in the texture’s grid, identifies the surrounding texels, and uses the fractional parts of the grid position as the interpolation parameters. What happens when a coordinate falls outside the nominal 0–1 range depends on the texture’s address configuration. For example, the Illinois course notes demonstrate wrapping an out-of-range coordinate back into the 0–1 interval before finding the grid position.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Coordinate orientation is also convention-dependent. Microsoft’s UWP example places (0,0) at the top left and (1,1) at the bottom right, and treats texels as centered in grid cells. That describes its example; other APIs or image pipelines may use different orientation or addressing conventions. Microsoft Learn

- For textures shrinking on screen: Mipmapping uses progressively lower-resolution texture representations to improve minification. Bilinear filtering on one level alone does not choose among those resolutions.
- For angled or highly stretched surfaces: Anisotropic filtering is designed for projected texture footprints that are elongated or oblique, where simpler filtering can blur detail.
- For deliberately crisp pixels: Nearest-point sampling may be preferable because blending adjacent colors softens boundaries.
The best choice depends on the desired sharpness, whether the texture is enlarged or reduced, the viewing angle, and the available performance and memory budget. Mipmaps require additional texture storage; filtering options make different quality and cost tradeoffs rather than serving as interchangeable names for the same operation.
