Baidu is a Chinese technology company founded as a search engine business in 2000. Calling it “the Chinese Google” is a useful starting point for its search role, but not a claim that the two companies have the same products, global reach, market position, or business mix. Baidu now presents itself as an AI company with a broad internet, cloud, and intelligent-driving business.
What is Baidu?
Baidu, Inc. began as a search engine business in 2000, according to its SEC-filed Form 20-F. Search remains part of its consumer ecosystem, but it is no longer a complete description of the company.

Baidu’s company overview describes it as “a leading AI company with a strong internet foundation.” That is the company’s own positioning, rather than an independent ranking. Baidu also says its mission is “to make the complicated world simpler through technology.”

People can use Baidu’s products to search for information, browse content, ask questions, access online services, and use AI-powered tools. Baidu’s flagship Baidu App brings together mobile search, a content feed, and other services. The company reported 679 million monthly active users for Baidu App in December 2025; this is an app usage figure, not a count of search users or a measure of search-market share.

- AI tools: Its portfolio includes ERNIE Bot and other AI-native or AI-powered products.
These products sit within a wider set of businesses. Baidu identifies Mobile Ecosystem, AI Cloud, and Intelligent Driving & Other Growth Initiatives as key areas of Baidu General Business; iQIYI is a separate segment.
How Baidu’s AI business fits in
Baidu says it has consistently invested in AI since 2010. It describes its AI technology stack as four layers: cloud infrastructure, its PaddlePaddle deep-learning framework, ERNIE foundation models, and applications. The company also includes AI cloud and intelligent driving among its major business areas.
Baidu’s quarterly results illustrate why its AI activity should not be reduced to a single chatbot or model. In Q1 2026, the company reported RMB 13.6 billion in revenue from its company-defined Baidu Core AI-powered Business segment, up 49% year over year. That figure is not search revenue. In Q2 2026, it reported RMB 2.5 billion in AI Applications revenue, up 3% year over year; that is a specific segment figure, not total AI revenue. See Baidu’s Q1 2026 results and Q2 2026 results.
Baidu’s Q1 2026 release also reported that ERNIE 5.1 ranked first among Chinese models on a text leaderboard and fourth globally on LMArena’s search leaderboard at that time. Those are Baidu’s descriptions of leaderboard results, not a general measure of model superiority.

No. The comparison is useful because both names are associated with search, and Baidu’s own company history began with search. It becomes misleading if taken to mean that their products, reach, market positions, or sources of revenue are equivalent.
Baidu’s current description spans mobile search and content, AI models and applications, cloud services, and intelligent-driving initiatives. The company says Baidu General Business accounted for over 70% of revenue in the past three years; that is Baidu’s company-reported figure for the period it specifies, not a measure of search’s share of revenue.
The available company materials do not establish a current independent, apples-to-apples comparison with Google or a current Baidu search-market-share figure. So “the Chinese Google” is best read as a quick orientation to Baidu’s search roots—not as a precise comparison of the two companies.
