Amazon Web Services (AWS) is Amazon’s cloud computing platform. It lets people and organizations provision computing, storage, databases, networking, and other IT services over the internet, usually paying for the resources they use. AWS is a collection of services—not one application—and customers still choose, configure, secure, and manage the resources they use.
What is AWS?
AWS is a cloud platform made up of many separate services that customers can combine to run applications, store data, build software, and support other technology workloads. Amazon Web Services began offering IT infrastructure services in 2006. In its overview published June 2, 2026, AWS described a platform with more than 200 services across areas including computing, storage, databases, networking, analytics, security, developer tools, and artificial intelligence. AWS Overview
Rather than purchasing all the servers and related hardware up front, a customer can select resources through AWS and provision them when needed. AWS owns and maintains the underlying facilities and network-connected hardware; customers remain responsible for choosing and configuring services for their needs.

Cloud computing is the on-demand delivery of IT resources over the internet. AWS describes it as delivering computing power, databases, storage, applications, and other resources through a cloud services platform with pay-as-you-go pricing. AWS’s explanation of cloud computing
#1 Best Overall
The practical difference from owning all infrastructure is how resources are obtained and managed: customers provision what they need rather than buying and maintaining every server themselves. Cloud computing does not remove all management work. Customers still make choices about configuration, security, capacity, and cost.
What can you do with AWS?
AWS services cover many kinds of technical work. A beginner can think of them in these practical groups; the examples are categories, not a complete catalog. AWS services by category
Rank #2
- Compute: Run code and applications using computing resources.
- Storage: Keep files and other data.
- Databases: Organize and query structured or non-relational data.
- Networking and content delivery: Connect cloud resources and deliver data.
- Management, security, analytics, and AI: Operate applications, protect resources, analyze information, and add capabilities.
A single workload may use several services together. Which ones are appropriate depends on what the customer is building and how it needs to operate.
How are AWS Regions and Availability Zones organized?
AWS infrastructure is divided into geographic Regions and separate infrastructure locations within them called Availability Zones. Regions provide geographic deployment choices; Availability Zones provide distinct locations within a Region. AWS says each Region has at least three physically separate Availability Zones. Its Global Infrastructure page listed 39 Regions and 124 Availability Zones when accessed October 7, 2026; those counts can change. AWS Global Infrastructure

Using multiple Availability Zones can support a more resilient design, but it does not make an application resilient automatically. The application and its services must be configured to use multiple zones appropriately.
How does AWS pricing work?
There is no single price for using AWS. Most services use pay-as-you-go pricing, but rates depend on the service and may vary with usage, configuration, and Region. AWS also lists flat-rate and commitment-based options. Savings Plans apply to eligible AWS Compute and AWS Machine Learning use and require a one- or three-year commitment. Check the relevant service’s rates and use the AWS Pricing Calculator and pricing information to estimate a planned setup; an estimate is only meaningful when the services, configuration, usage, and Region are specified.

Is AWS free?
Some AWS usage is available through limited Free Tier offers, but AWS as a whole is not free. Current AWS documentation describes $100 in credits for new customers after account creation, with the opportunity to earn up to another $100 through eligible activities. The Free account plan ends after six months or when credits run out, whichever comes first. The credits themselves expire 12 months after account creation, a separate deadline from the account plan’s end. AWS Free Tier documentation and AWS Free Tier FAQs

AWS Marketplace is a catalog where AWS customers can find, buy, deploy, and manage third-party software, data, and services in connection with AWS. Its offers can have different prices and terms. A software trial may not pay for the AWS infrastructure needed to run that software, so the customer may still incur charges for services such as computing resources. AWS Marketplace buyer guide
AWS Marketplace is distinct from Amazon’s retail marketplace: it focuses on third-party cloud-related offerings rather than general consumer shopping.
