asdf is an open-source command-line version manager that lets you install and switch among versions of programming languages and other developer tools through one interface. Its plugins provide the install logic, while a project’s .tool-versions file can specify which versions commands should use.
What asdf does
Instead of using a different version manager for every language, asdf provides a shared command-line workflow for multiple runtimes and tools. Its project README describes it as a way to “Manage multiple runtime versions with a single CLI tool, extendable via plugins.” The official examples include Ruby, Node.js, Elixir and Erlang.
asdf does not itself contain all the logic needed to install every supported tool. It delegates that work to plugins, which are Git repositories with scripts for operations such as listing available versions, downloading files and installing a selected version.
How asdf chooses a tool version
asdf uses a .tool-versions file to associate a project with specific tool versions. When a command runs, asdf looks for this file in the current directory and then checks parent directories toward $HOME. This lets a repository declare versions for its own work without requiring every project to use the same versions.

asdf generally expects an exact version. If no applicable version is listed, a command that needs that tool’s version cannot be resolved; asdf current can help show the current resolution, including a missing one. The official Getting Started guide also documents using latest with asdf install to resolve a version at execution time. That installs the version resolved at that moment; it is not a permanent instruction to track the latest release automatically.
Install asdf and set up a project
The official Getting Started guide documents installation through Homebrew, Zypper, Pacman or AUR, a precompiled release binary, go install, or cloning and building the source. The right route depends on your operating system and package manager; consult the guide for the applicable instructions and shell setup.

After installing and configuring asdf, the guide’s Node.js example is:
asdf plugin add nodejs https://github.com/asdf-vm/asdf-nodejs.gitadds the Node.js plugin from its Git repository.asdf install nodejs latestinstalls the version that asdf resolves as latest when the command runs.asdf set -u nodejs 16.5.0sets Node.js 16.5.0 at the user level, as shown in the guide. For a project-specific setting, use the appropriate project scope instead.
For a project, the key practice is to record the desired version in its .tool-versions file and commit that file with the project if collaborators should share the same version declaration. The file records the version choice; each collaborator still needs asdf and the relevant plugin and installed tool version.

What an asdf plugin does
A plugin is a Git repository containing executable scripts that connect asdf to a tool’s release and installation process. The official plugin guide describes these common responsibilities:

Plugin authors can start from the asdf plugin template or create a repository named asdf-<tool_name>. The guide gives this testing command as an example: asdf plugin test nodejs https://github.com/asdf-vm/asdf-nodejs.git node --version. It is a documented example, not a guarantee that every plugin or environment will pass that test unchanged.

Are asdf plugins safe?
A plugin is executable code, so adding one means trusting its scripts and any dependencies or downloads involved in installation. The official community plugin index explicitly advises: “Read each plugins code before installation and usage.” Before adopting a plugin, inspect its repository, installation behavior, dependencies, release references and maintenance activity.
The community index supports adding plugins by shorthand name, but the core team recommends the direct Git URL form: asdf plugin add <name> <git_url>. A direct URL makes the repository being added explicit. The index also documents pinning a plugin to a commit with asdf plugin update <name> <git-ref>. Pinning can make plugin behavior more reproducible, but it also means you need a deliberate process to review and adopt updates.

When asdf is a good fit
asdf is most useful when you want one workflow for several runtimes or tools and a project-level file that records their versions. Its plugin model can extend that workflow beyond the tools included in the official examples. Before choosing it, check that plugins exist for the tools you need and that those repositories are maintained to a standard you trust.
If you already use a dedicated manager such as nvm, rbenv or pyenv, the decision is not simply whether asdf supports your language. Compare the tools you rely on, project-file conventions, shell integration, operating-system installation options, update workflow and how much plugin code you are willing to trust. The asdf README positions it as a unified alternative to managing tools such as these separately; that does not mean their workflows or project configuration are interchangeable.
