It attaches tags to memory allocations and pointers, then checks that they match when the processor accesses memory. Android uses it in selected system components, and developers can opt eligible apps into MTE using the android:memtagMode manifest attribute. It is an additional detection and defense layer—not a guarantee that Android or every app is free of memory bugs.
How MTE detects memory errors
Arm describes MTE as “a hardware implementation of tagged memory.” The extension assigns metadata tags to memory allocations and corresponding pointers. When code reads from or writes to memory, the processor compares the pointer’s tag with the tag on the memory. A mismatch can indicate that the program is accessing memory in an invalid way.
This can help identify errors such as use-after-free, where code uses memory after it has been released, and buffer overflows, where code accesses beyond an allocation’s boundaries. MTE is particularly relevant to native code, which works directly with memory. It detects certain classes of misuse; it does not replace secure programming, testing, or other security defenses.
Where Android uses MTE
The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) says Android 12’s kernel and userspace heap allocator can augment allocations with metadata. AOSP also lists selected security-critical components that use asynchronous MTE as an extra defense layer. These include networking daemons and utilities (with an exception noted for netd), Bluetooth, SecureElement and NFC HALs and system apps, statsd, system_server, and zygote64. Component selection considered privilege, exposure to untrusted input, and acceptable performance impact. This is selective deployment, not protection enabled in every Android process.

Android MTE modes and what they are for
Android’s app-facing control is the android:memtagMode attribute, set on an application or process. AOSP and the Android NDK documentation describe four values. Broadly, synchronous checking is useful for development diagnosis, while asynchronous checking is used by some platform components as a mitigation. Exact behavior depends on the implementation and device.

How developers can enable and test MTE
MTE is available only on select devices; an Android version alone does not guarantee compatible hardware. Before relying on it, check the target device’s support using the NDK guidance, then test the app under MTE on compatible hardware.

- Check hardware support. Use the support-checking guidance in the Android NDK documentation for the devices you intend to support.
- Configure the app or process. Set the appropriate
android:memtagModevalue in the manifest, following the current NDK and AOSP instructions. - Run thorough tests on an MTE-compatible device. Exercise relevant app paths under MTE and investigate any reported memory errors or compatibility problems before release.
- Resolve issues before shipping. AOSP warns: “Apps that enable MTE should be thoroughly tested on an MTE-compatible device before being shipped to Google Play. Failure to do so may lead to critical bugs being discovered only on MTE-capable devices, which may harm usability of the app”.
The available documentation does not establish a universal performance overhead, so developers should measure behavior on their target devices rather than assume a fixed cost.

Arm’s MTE User Guide, version 1.0, calls Google Pixel 8 “the first device to be released with MTE enabled.” This makes it a documented historical example of MTE-enabled test hardware, not a current compatibility list or a recommendation for consumers. MTE availability on any particular device should be checked directly; the cited guide does not establish current support or availability for later models.
