Apple MetalFX Upscaling is a graphics API in Apple’s Metal framework that lets game developers render frames below the display’s output resolution and upscale them. It offers spatial and temporal methods, but its presence does not guarantee a particular game will run faster or look as good as native resolution. Comparisons with NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS depend on the specific version, game integration and settings.

What MetalFX Upscaling does

A game can spend substantial graphics work rendering every frame at the display’s full resolution. Upscaling lets it render at a lower internal resolution, then reconstruct an image at the target output resolution. Apple introduced MetalFX as a way to reduce rendering work while retaining image quality; that is the design goal, not a guarantee for every game or setting.

MetalFX is part of Metal, Apple’s graphics framework, and is intended for developers building games and other graphics applications on Apple platforms. Players encounter it only when a game implements the API and exposes an appropriate setting or uses it internally.

MetalFX has spatial and temporal methods

Spatial upscaling

Spatial upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from spatial information in an anti-aliased input color image. It is the simpler of MetalFX’s two integration paths because it does not accumulate information across frames. Apple’s feature table lists spatial upscaling from Apple GPU family 3.

Temporal anti-aliasing and upscaling

Temporal upscaling combines information across frames, using current and previous-frame results and temporal inputs such as motion and depth. Apple describes this as the higher-quality route, but it requires more integration work and depends on accurate input data and tuning. Apple’s feature table lists temporal upscaling from Apple GPU family 7.

Apple’s May 21, 2026 Metal Feature Set Tables identify M1-series GPUs as family 7 and list later M-series families as well. These are feature-family capabilities, not a promise that every game supports MetalFX or that performance will be identical across devices.

How MetalFX compares with DLSS, FSR and XeSS

These names do not describe one interchangeable feature each. Vendors offer multiple methods, versions or related graphics features, so a meaningful comparison should name the specific upscaler and mode. The vendor documentation describes capabilities and integration; it does not establish a universal quality or performance winner.

Why implementation matters to image quality

Upscaling is not a switch that automatically removes rendering artifacts. Apple’s WWDC22 developer session advises running temporal upscaling before post-processing and using a well-distributed jitter sequence and suitable negative mip bias. It also warns that texture-detail choices can cause flicker or moiré in high-frequency patterns. Temporal methods additionally depend on motion, depth and previous-frame data being supplied and tuned appropriately.

Apple presenter Kelvin Chiu, identified in the session as part of Apple’s GPU Software team, said: “MetalFX Upscaling is optimized to run best on Apple devices.” That is Apple’s characterization in its WWDC22 session, not an independent comparative finding.

What the launch examples do—and do not—show

Apple’s June 6, 2022 announcement described MetalFX as a way to render complex scenes with less compute-intensive frames and apply spatial upscaling and temporal anti-aliasing. Its WWDC22 presentation showed a No Man’s Sky example and named GRID Legends, Resident Evil Village and No Man’s Sky as Mac games expected that year. These are launch-era examples, not a current compatibility list or independent proof of comparative performance.

How to judge a real-world comparison

The cited vendor sources do not provide a controlled, current, cross-platform test that ranks MetalFX against DLSS, FSR and XeSS. A useful head-to-head comparison needs the same game, scene, output resolution, graphics settings and quality preset, along with the exact internal resolution and technology version. It should report image quality and frame rate separately, and account for motion because stability and artifacts can change between still and moving scenes. Frame generation should be identified separately rather than folded into an upscaling result.
