The stick contains the computer; HDMI sends its display output to the screen, while USB or another adapter supplies power. It is a device form factor, not a special edition of Android.
What the term means
You may also see this kind of device called an “Android PC on a stick,” “Android HDMI dongle,” or “Android mini PC.” The names describe the small, stick-shaped hardware and its use with a larger screen. The phrase appeared in coverage of HDMI-connected Android devices as early as 2012; Always Innovating’s description of its HDMI Dongle reproduces contemporary coverage from that period.
How an Android stick works
Connect the device to an HDMI input, provide the required power, and join it to Wi-Fi. Android apps then appear on the connected television or monitor. Control depends on the model: some devices support a remote, USB keyboard or mouse, or Bluetooth peripherals.
For example, a 2012 report on the CX-01 described HDMI for video, a full-size USB port for a keyboard or mouse, and microUSB for charging or connecting to a computer. A 2014 review of Dell’s WYSE Cloud Connect described Bluetooth keyboard and mouse pairing, as well as power from an MHL HDMI port on a compatible monitor. These are examples from particular older devices, not features to assume on every stick.

What people use one for
Consumer Android sticks were presented as a way to browse the web, use apps, play games, or view media on a television. Dell positioned the WYSE Cloud Connect differently—as an Android-based thin client for remote desktop and enterprise use. Those examples explain the range of intended uses, but they do not establish what current models can do or whether a particular product is available today.
What to check before using one
- Power: Requirements vary, and a television’s USB port may not supply enough power for a particular device. Check the model’s stated power requirements.
- Inputs: A television usually does not provide touch input. Check whether the device supports the remote, keyboard, mouse, or Bluetooth accessories you plan to use.
- App compatibility: Android apps may expect touch, a microphone, or other hardware the stick does not have. In his May 2014 review, Computerworld’s Joel Snyder reported that Google Play rejected some apps for the WYSE Cloud Connect because it considered the device incompatible. That was a limitation of the reviewed model, not proof that every Android stick has the same problem.
- Ports and fit: A stick can block a neighboring HDMI input. An extension cable may help with clearance if it is compatible, but not every setup needs one.
- Software support: Check the Android version, security-update support, manufacturer support, and whether the Google Play Store and your specific apps work. Historical product coverage does not establish current availability or support.

How to evaluate a model today
If you are considering a currently listed product, verify its present availability and support rather than relying on old descriptions. Compare the Android version and update policy, app compatibility, processor, memory and storage, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, power requirements, HDMI fit, and supported input devices. These checks matter because a device that displays Android on a large screen may still be a poor fit for apps that depend on touch or unsupported hardware.
