Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is a command-line tool that lets a computer communicate with an Android device. Developers use it to install and debug apps, run commands in the device’s shell, transfer files, and manage connections to one or more devices. ADB is included in Android SDK Platform-Tools; it is software, not an Android app or a physical device.
How Android Debug Bridge works
ADB uses a client-server setup with three parts:
- ADB client: Runs on the computer and sends commands, such as
adb devices. - ADB server: Runs on that computer, manages connections between clients and devices, and listens on local TCP port 5037 for client commands.
adbddaemon: Runs on the Android device and carries out the commands it receives.
When you run an ADB command, the client communicates with the computer-side server, which routes it to the selected device. Android’s ADB reference documents this architecture and the commands ADB supports.
What you can do with ADB
ADB is useful when you need direct, scriptable control beyond routine app deployment in Android Studio. Common examples include:
- Install an app:
adb install path_to_apkinstalls an APK from the computer. - Choose a device:
adb -s SERIAL install path_to_apktargets the device with that serial when multiple devices are connected. - Open a device shell: Use ADB to run shell commands on the Android device.
- Transfer files:
adb pull remote localcopies a file from the device to the computer;adb push local remotecopies one from the computer to the device. - Forward a port:
adb forward tcp:6100 tcp:7100forwards host port 6100 to device port 7100. - Check connections:
adb deviceslists devices visible to the ADB server.
These examples are documented by Android; they illustrate the commands rather than report independent testing. Android Studio can perform common deployment tasks without requiring you to type ADB commands, while direct command-line access is useful for shell work, file transfers, port forwarding, scripting, and controlling multiple devices.

How to connect a phone over USB
- Install ADB. Get Android SDK Platform-Tools through Android Studio’s SDK Manager or the official Platform-Tools download and release notes. Android Studio users can use its installed copy; the standalone package is an option if you do not use Studio.
- Enable Developer options and USB debugging in the device’s Android settings. The exact settings path can vary by device and Android version; follow the device maker’s instructions if needed.
- Connect the device to the computer with a USB data cable compatible with its port.
- Check the connection by running
adb devicesin a terminal or command prompt. If the device displays an RSA-key authorization prompt, unlock it and accept the prompt to authorize that computer. On Android 4.2.2 and later, this confirmation is required before ADB commands are allowed.
The RSA prompt is a security safeguard: it asks you to trust the connected computer. If the device is not listed, first check that USB debugging is enabled, the cable supports data, and any authorization prompt has been accepted.
Wireless ADB: pairing or the older USB-first method
The right wireless setup depends on the device type and Android version. Android’s current ADB wireless-debugging guide distinguishes pairing-based Wireless debugging from a legacy workflow that begins over USB.

Do not confuse the USB-first TCP/IP workflow with the pairing-based Wireless debugging feature. The latter is the current route for supported devices and does not use the same initial USB step.

ADB is distributed as part of Android SDK Platform-Tools. You can install or update the package through Android Studio’s SDK Manager or use sdkmanager. Android Developers’ release notes list Platform-Tools version 37.0.1, released in July 2026, including changes to ADB’s mDNS backend and USB implementations on Linux, Windows, and macOS. That version and release date reflect the notes available on October 4, 2026; check the official release notes for newer releases.

Android says newer Platform-Tools are intended to be backward compatible, though some features require recent Android versions. Updating the tools can matter if you need newer connection features or fixes; the device’s Android version still determines whether it supports those features.
